The first two consist of examination, measurement, and checking muscles. Clothes are inventoried. As each autopsy ends, bodies are covered with sheets. There is no soundtrack. We see a body with extensive burns. The hands and trunks of the pathologists appear; sometimes we see them holding the microphone of a tape recorder. The work is sometimes delicate, sometimes not; it's often bloody. The Atomic Cafe Pierce Rafferty, Kevin Rafferty (II), Jayne LoaderRated: Unrated Date Added: Oct 19, 2007 Summary: The atomic bomb changed the world forever, and this wonderful film shows how Americans expressed wonder over atomic weapons and then suffered from the pervasive fear that America would be on the receiving end of a Soviet nuclear attack. "Atomic Cafe" is a brilliant compilation of archival film clips beginning with the first atomic bomb detonation in the New Mexico desert. The footage, much of it produced as government propaganda, follows the story of the bomb through the two atomic attacks on Japan that ended World War II to the bomb's central role in the cold war. Shown along with the famous "duck and cover" Civil Defense films are lesser-known clips, many of which possess a bizarre black humor when seen today, and it's easy to see why this film, which was produced in the early 1980s, became a cult classic sometimes referred to as the "nuclear "Reefer Madness"." Bellicose congressmen are shown advocating a freewheeling policy of nuclear strikes against China during the Korean War, suburban families are shown enjoying the comforts of their bomb shelters, and footage of a boy trying to bicycle to a bomb shelter in a "bomb survival suit" his father designed is priceless. "Atomic Cafe" is at once clever and poignant, a canny and offbeat look at a significant period in American history. "--Robert J. McNamara"

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan Martin ScorseseRated: Date Added: Oct 23, 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Summary: Portrait of an artist as a young man. Roughly chronological, using archival footage intercut with recent interviews, a story takes shape of Bob Dylan's (b. 1941) coming of age from 1961 to 1966 as a singer, songwriter, performer, and star. He takes from others: singing styles, chord changes, and rare records. He keeps moving: on stage, around New York City and on tour, from Suze Rotolo to Joan Baez and on, from songs of topical witness to songs of raucous independence, from folk to rock. He drops the past. He refuses, usually with humor and charm, to be simplified, classified, categorized, or finalized: always becoming, we see a shapeshifter on a journey with no direction home.

Punk's Not Dead Susan DynnerRated: Date Added: Jan 1, 2008 Sound: MP3 Summary: On the edge of the 30th anniversary of punk rock, Punk's Not Dead takes you into the sweaty underground clubs, backyard parties, recording studios, and yes, shopping malls and stadium shows where punk rock music and culture continue to thrive. Thirty years after bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols infamously shocked the system with their hard, fast, status-quo-killing rock, the longest-running punk band in history is drawing bigger crowds than ever, "pop-punk" bands have found success on MTV, and kids too young to drive are forming bands that carry the torch for punk's raw, immediate sound. Meanwhile, "punk" has become a marketing concept to sell everything from cars to vodka, and dyed hair and piercings mark a rite of passage for thousands of kids. Can the true, nonconformist punk spirit still exist in today's corporatized culture? Featuring interviews, performances, and behind-the-scenes journeys with the bands, labels, fans, and press who keep punk alive, Punk's Not Dead dares to juxtapose pop-punk's music and lifestyle against the roots in the 70s and 80s, resulting in unexpected revelations. A DIY search for the soul of a subculture and a celebration of all things loud, fast, and spiked, Punk's Not Dead shows punk is stronger and more relevant today than it's ever been.

Sympathy for the Devil Jean-Luc GodardRated: Unrated Writer: Jean-Luc Godard Date Added: Feb 28, 2010 Sound: AAC Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: This version of Jean-Luc Godard's 1968 "One Plus One" caused a legendary confrontation at a film festival when the director became infuriated at his producer's decision to attach the Rolling Stones' completed song "Sympathy for the Devil" at the film's end. Godard's own original plan had been to make a film of the Stones' construction of the tune in rehearsal, and intercut that with a story line about a white revolutionary who becomes suicidal when her lover embraces black separatism. Production problems caused Godard to give up that idea and just allow scenes to fall where they would, allowing viewers to construct the film in their own minds. Be that as it may, this slightly shorter and more commercial producer's cut does not lack in satisfaction by closing things out with the song as Stones fans know it. Overall, the film is a bewildering affair, and that's not at all a bad thing: one's orientation is whatever one makes of Godard's enthralling mess here. Even if a viewer is just interested in seeing the Stones at their peak and at work on their brilliant 1968 album "Beggars Banquet", this is a highly rewarding experience. Astute watchers and listeners will note that in an early take of the song, Mick Jagger sings the lyric, "I shouted out, 'Who killed Kennedy?'/When after all, it was you and me." Later, with no mention of a particularly tragic 1968 event in American politics, Jagger has revised the line to "I shouted out, 'Who killed the Kennedys?'" Talk about a startling moment. "--Tom Keogh"

An unwitting former policeman Dan (James Belushi) and his son Jack (Alex Neuberger) adopt Shoeshine in hopes of improving their strained relationship and what follows is a typical scene of home destruction by a young dog multiplied exponentially by the incredible strength, speed, and newly developed language skills of one super dog. While Jack and Shoeshine struggle with the conflict between Shoeshine's desire to be a regular dog and Jack's insistence that he use his newfound powers to help people, mayhem reigns in Capital City as Barsinister and his henchman Cad (Patrick Warburton--"Emperor's New Groove") wreak havoc on the entire city and Jack's dad, schoolmate Molly (Taylor Momsen), and her dog Polly (voiced by Amy Adams--"Enchanted") are all unwittingly dragged into the conflict. Underdog dedicates himself to good, quickly becoming revered as a superhero, but ultimately it will take the combined efforts and understanding of Underdog, Jack, Dan, Molly, and Polly to defeat Barsinister and save Capital City from destruction. Based on the original animated "Underdog" television series, this live action film is entertaining, if not great.

Year Of the Dog Mike WhiteRated: PG-13 Writer: Mike White Date Added: Sep 28, 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Has the world left you a stray? Summary: Molly Shannon gives a strange and strangely touching performance in "Year of the Dog". A quiet secretary named Peggy (Shannon, "Superstar", "Good Boy!") goes into a tailspin when her beloved dog Pencil dies, leading her to flirt with dating, veganism, animal rights activism, and violence. But though the plot may sound shapeless, the movie is sharp and focused, cutting to the bone of every character's obsessions and neuroses. Yet, though extremely funny, "Year of the Dog" isn't strictly satirical--writer/director Mike White (writer of "The Good Girl" and "Chuck & Buck") doesn't pass judgment on his characters, no matter how irrational or appalling their behavior may be. The movie has a cool empathy, a wistful yet unsparing glance at human weakness. The entire cast--which includes Laura Dern ("We Don't Live Here Anymore"), John C. Reilly ("Boogie Nights"), Regina King ("Ray"), and Peter Sarsgaard ("Boys Don't Cry")--walk a fine line between painfully real and comically absurd. Fans of distinctive directors like Don Roos ("The Opposite of Sex", "Happy Endings") and Todd Solondz ("Happiness", "Storytelling") will enjoy "Year of the Dog". "--Bret Fetzer"

Ali - Fear Eats the Soul Rainer Werner FassbinderRated: Unrated Writer: Rainer Werner Fassbinder Date Added: Oct 17, 2007 Languages: German Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Summary: Rainer Werner Fassbinder paid tribute to his mentor, Douglas Sirk, with this loose adaptation of "All That Heaven Allows", the classic American soaper of a widow falling for younger man to the disapproval of family and friends. Fassbinder combines the Sirk melodrama with the story told in his own "The American Soldier". An aging, lonely charwoman (sweet old Brigitte Mira) befriends a Moroccan guest worker (El Hedi ben Salem) at least 20 years her junior. Finding comfort and happiness in one another's company, they suddenly marry. Her kids are aghast, his friends appalled, and the neighborhood turns its back, so the two pull together for support. Their relationship ironically begins to unravel when the pressure of community prejudice eases and they must confront the gulf between them. Combining melodrama with social commentary, Fassbinder offers a sharp, incisive portrait of prejudice in modern Germany grounded in contemporary social conditions. Mira delivers a tender, vulnerable performance and Fassbinder molds Salem's stiffness into a distinctive character trait of a man ill at ease in German society. It's an assured and beautiful film, full of gliding camerawork and evocative images, and invested with intimacy and gentleness. Even Fassbinder's characteristically grim conclusion defies tragedy for a glimmer of hope, a welcome and affecting rarity in his career. "--Sean Axmaker"

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore Martin ScorseseRated: PG Writer: Robert Getchell Date Added: Oct 19, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: A picture for anyone who has ever dreamed of a second chance! Summary: Having scored a critical triumph with "Mean Streets", Martin Scorsese accepted "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" as his first big-studio assignment, proving his versatility and further advancing his promising career. Hot off "The Exorcist" with her choice of projects at Warner Brothers, Ellen Burstyn sought a hot young talent (Scorsese was recommended by Francis Coppola) to direct Robert Getchell's fine, sensitive screenplay about Alice Wyatt, a newly-widowed 35-year-old lounge singer with a bratty 12-year-old son (Alfred Lutter) and a very uncertain future. Her pursuit of broken dreams lands her a waitressing job in an Arizona diner, where she befriends foul-mouthed Flo (Diane Ladd) and meets and falls in love with a divorced farmer (Kris Kristofferson). With absolute authenticity of emotion and incident, "Alice"--which earned Burstyn a well-deserved Oscar® and features supporting roles for future "Taxi Driver" costars Jodie Foster and Harvey Keitel--conveys a then-timely sense of strength and endurance from a single mother in desperate times. There have been several similar dramas made since 1974, but "Alice" (which inspired the popular TV sitcoms "Alice" and "Flo") is still the best. Trivia buffs: Look closely for Ladd's daughter--a very young Laura Dern--and Scorsese as background extras in the diner scenes. "--Jeff Shannon"

| 1117 | Art School Confidential | Terry Zwigoff | R | 2006 | Sony Pictures | Drama | |
Art School Confidential Terry ZwigoffRated: R Date Added: Oct 18, 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Bitter, misanthropic, yet sometimes blisteringly funny, "Art School Confidential" is not a movie for everyone. Jerome (Max Minghella, "Bee Season") goes to art school in the hopes of having his genuine ability recognized and cherished--but instead, finds his teachers to be self-obsessed has-beens, his peers jaded and floundering, and himself being investigated for a series of gruesome stranglings. He becomes obsessed with a lovely student named Audrey (Sophia Myles, "Tristan and Isolde"), but she's more interested in hunky Jonah (Matt Keeslar, "Splendor"), whose crude yet acclaimed paintings of cars and tanks make Jerome want to tear his own eyes out. The crime-thriller plot of "Art School Confidential", however, is merely a contrivance to string together a series of caustic digs at the shallow, narcissistic, talentless hacks who go to art school in the vain hope of achieving fame, wealth, and sexual abundance with little or no effort. For most viewers, who want to think that people are largely well-intentioned and decent, this will seem snide and cruel; but for some viewers, who believe people are foolish and blinkered, "Art School Confidential" will seem like an oasis in the arid desert of lies and propaganda about the good side of human nature. If this is your movie, you know who you are, and I encourage you to seek it out as soon as possible. Directed by Terry Zwigoff ("Bad Santa") and based on the work of cartoonist Dan Clowes; their previous collaboration was the much warmer "Ghost World". Also featuring sharp turns from John Malkovich ("Being John Malkovich"), Anjelica Huston ("Prizzi's Honor"), and Jim Broadbent ("Moulin Rouge!"). "--Bret Fetzer"

Babel Alejandro González IñárrituRated: R Writer: Guillermo Arriaga, Alejandro González Iñárritu Date Added: Oct 15, 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: If You Want to be Understood...Listen Summary: Brilliantly conceived, superbly directed, and beautifully acted, "Babel" is inarguably one of the best films of 2006. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu and his co-writer, Guillermo Arriaga (the two also collaborated on "Amores Perros" and "21 Grams") weave together the disparate strands of their story into a finely hewn fabric by focusing on what appear to be several equally incongruent characters: an American (Brad Pitt) touring Morocco with his wife (Cate Blanchett) become the focus of an international incident also involving a hardscrabble Moroccan farmer (Mustapha Rachidi) struggling to keep his two young sons in line and his family together. A San Diego nanny (Adriana Barraza), her employers absent, makes the disastrous decision to take their kids with her to a wedding in Mexico. And a deaf-mute Japanese teen (the extraordinary Rinko Kikuchi) deals with a relationship with her father (Koji Yakusho) and the world in general that's been upended by the death of her mother. It is perhaps not surprising, or particularly original, that a gun is the device that ties these people together. Yet "Babel" isn't merely about violence and its tragic consequences. It's about communication, and especially the lack of it--both intercultural, raising issues like terrorism and immigration, and intracultural, as basic as husbands talking to their wives and parents understanding their children. Iñárritu's command of his medium, sound and visual alike, is extraordinary; the camera work is by turns kinetic and restrained, the music always well matched to the scenes, the editing deft but not confusing, and the film (which clocks in at a lengthy 143 minutes) is filled with indelible moments. Many of those moments are also pretty stark and grim, and no will claim that all of this leads to a "happy" ending, but there is a sense of reconciliation, perhaps even resolution. "If You Want to be Understood... Listen," goes the tagline. And if you want a movie that will leave you thinking, "Babel" is it. "--Sam Graham"

Baby Boy John SingletonRated: R Writer: John Singleton Date Added: Jan 31, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: A worthy companion piece to 1991's "Boyz N the Hood", John Singleton's "Baby Boy" expresses compassionate but unforgiving criticism of young, African American black men who lead reckless, irresponsible lives while blithely blaming racism for their chronic disadvantage. That's already enough to make this a provocative and emotionally challenging film, but Singleton injects his drama with such passionate vitality that it never seems inflammatory; instead, in presenting this portrait of a confused and conflicted 20-year-old black man named Jody (Tyrese Gibson), Singleton is both affectionate and accusatory, lending "Baby Boy" an edgy, timeless wisdom that other, less courageous films could never hope to offer.

Bad Day at Black Rock John SturgesRated: Unrated Writer: Howard Breslin, Don McGuire Date Added: Jan 31, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Suddenly you realize murder is at your elbow! - and there's no way out! Summary: One of the first Hollywood films to deal openly with white racism toward Japanese Americans during World War II, this drama directed by 1950s action maestro John Sturges ("The Great Escape") stars Spencer Tracy as a one-armed stranger named MacReedy, who arrives in the tiny town of Black Rock on a hot day in 1945. Seeking a hotel room and the whereabouts of an ethnic Japanese farmer named Komoko, MacReedy runs smack into a wall of hostility that escalates into serious threats. In time it becomes apparent that Komoko has been murdered by a local, racist chieftain, Reno Smith (Robert Ryan), who also plans on dispensing with MacReedy. Tracy's hero is forced to fight his way past Smith's goons (among them Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin) and sundry allies (Anne Francis) to keep alive, setting the stage for memorable suspense crisply orchestrated by Sturges. Casting is the film's principal strength, however: Tracy, the indispensable icon of integrity, and Ryan, the indispensable noir image of spiritual blight, are as creatively unlikely a pairing as Sturges's shotgun marriage of Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen in "The Magnificent Seven". The Bad Seed Mervyn LeRoyRated: Unrated Writer: William March, Maxwell Anderson, John Lee Mahin Date Added: Oct 21, 2007 Comments: "The Bad Seed" is the big shocker! Summary: "A basket full of kisses for a basket full of hugs." Those are chilling words, at least when uttered by that ice princess, Patty McCormack. As Rhoda Penmark, she is as pretty as a porcelain doll but drips venom with each curtsey and polite response. Little Rhoda's mother is terrified she has passed on her own mother's corruption. Oops, turns out she's right. This passes the test of time, as it still gets under your skin. The character development is tight and the story very involving. Not even Freddy Krueger had the ability to scare like tiny McCormack, looking just like a little adult while she literally beats out the competition for a penmanship award. However, director Mervyn LeRoy's hands were tied over the ending, which was changed from the source material--Maxwell Anderson's hit Broadway play. A supposedly more appropriate, and moral, ending was demanded by the studio. This was remade (badly) in 1985. "--Rochelle O'Gorman"

Beautiful Juhn JaihongRated: Writer: Juhn Jaihong, Ki-duk Kim Date Added: Aug 1, 2008 Languages: Korean Subtitles: English Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Arumdabda Summary: Eun Young's striking beauty makes her the center of attraction wherever she goes. Regrettably, that also includes some unwanted attention from perverted male stalkers who fantasize about having sex with her. One of her stalkers (Kim Min Soo, Time) gets his wish by intruding into her house, then raping her ruthlessly. Later on, he confesses to the police that it was really he who was raped by her beauty. Eun Young descends into madness after the ordeal and develops bulimia and anorexia. Watching her sink deeper and deeper into self-destruction, warm-hearted policeman Eun Cheol (Lee Cheon Hee, Bar Legend) feels sorry for the beauty, but what began as compassion turns into an uncontrollable sexual obsession when lust starts to consume his heart. Written and produced by maverick arthouse director Kim Ki Duk, Beautiful paints the gripping psychological tale of a woman whose exceptional beauty makes her the object of unwanted lust and envy. In his feature-length debut, director Jeon Jae Hong (Mul Go Gi), who proudly carries the nickname "Little Kim Ki Duk", casts Cha Soo Yeon (For Eternal Hearts) as Eun Young, a tragic heroine who suffers a mental breakdown after being raped by her stalker, blaming her beauty to be the cause of all her misery. Exploring the extremities of sexual perversion and obsession in human behavior, director Jeon throws the audience into a furious whirlwind of psychological warfare while retaining much of the essence of what is widely known as Kim Ki Duk's signature style. The film saw its world premiere in the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival's Panorama section, receiving rave reviews along with high praise for Cha's soul-stripping performance.

Being There Hal AshbyRated: PG Writer: Jerzy Kosinski, Jerzy Kosinski Date Added: Feb 4, 2007 Picture Format: Academy Ratio Comments: Getting there is half the fun; being there is all of it! Summary: Thanks to an extraordinary, delicately balanced performance by Peter Sellers, "Being There" received mixed reviews during its theatrical release in 1979, but has since become a celebrated comedy with a loyal following. It's one of the most unusual black comedies ever made, simply because it stretches a simple premise over 130 minutes of straight-faced, strangely compelling commentary on politics, media, and celebrity in media-savvy America. Adapted by Jerzy Kozinsky from his own novel, the movie's about a simple-minded, middle-aged gardener who, after a lifetime of seclusion and safety in a Washington, D.C. townhouse, gets his first exposure to reality beyond the walls of his sheltered existence. His only reference to the world is through his childlike addiction to television, and when a chance encounter brings him into the inner fold of a dying billionaire (Melvyn Douglas), he suddenly finds himself the toast of Washington's political elite. His simple phrases about gardening are misinterpreted as anything from economic predictions to sage political advice, and under the sharp direction of Hal Ashby, Sellers has the audacity to take this comedic conceit to its logical extreme. "Being There" is not for all tastes--especially not for those who don't appreciate comedic subtlety. But as a showcase for the daring genius of Peter Sellers, this is a classic movie in a category all its own. "--Jeff Shannon"

The Best Years of Our Lives William WylerRated: Unrated Writer: MacKinlay Kantor, Robert E. Sherwood Date Added: Jan 4, 2008 Sound: MP3 Comments: THE SCREEN'S GREATEST LOVE STORY IS THE BEST FILM THIS YEAR FROM HOLLYWOOD! Summary: The story concentrates on the social re-adjustment of three World War II servicemen, each from a different station of society. Al Stephenson (Fredric March) returns to an influential banking position, but finds it hard to reconcile his loyalties to ex-servicemen with new commercial realities. Fred Derry (Dana Andrews) is an ordinary working man who finds it difficult to hold down a job or pick up the threads of his marriage. Having had both hands burnt off during the war, Homer Parrish (Harold Russell) is unsure that his fiancée's feelings are still those of love and not those of pity. Each of the veterans faces a crisis upon his arrival, and each crisis is a microcosm of the experiences of many American warriors who found an alien world awaiting them when they came marching home. In short, the film has everything: laughter, tears, romance, anger, compassion, steadfast love, wrenching drama, social message, emotional dynamite.

Black Snake Moan Craig BrewerRated: R Writer: Craig Brewer Date Added: Oct 22, 2007 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Everything is hotter down south. Summary: The lurid scenario--a nymphomaniacal white trash nymphet (Christina Ricci) is held prisoner by a bitter bluesman (Samuel L. Jackson)--gives way to an affecting tale of redemption in "Black Snake Moan", writer/director Craig Brewer's follow-up to the acclaimed "Hustle & Flow". Lazarus (Jackson, "Jungle Fever", "Pulp Fiction") finds Rae (Ricci, "Monster", "The Ice Storm") beaten unconscious on the road in front of his backwoods house. After bringing her inside, he learns of her wanton ways and decides to exorcise his own demons by curing Rae of her sexual compulsion. "Black Snake Moan" could have been terrible, but Brewer takes his story seriously enough to dig into the genuine emotions of such a situation (though along the way he certainly flirts with sexploitation overtones--several scenes look like they were plucked straight out of a hitherto unknown 1970s trash classic). Ricci, Jackson, and the supporting cast (including pop star Justin Timberlake, giving a surprisingly good performance as Rae's boyfriend) treat the characters with respect, honesty, and humor. The result is off-kilter and maybe a little too fond of its sleazy cinematic forbears to truly hit the emotional notes it's after, but "Black Snake Moan" has considerably more substance than its marketing would suggest. Blonde Venus Josef von SternbergRated: Writer: Jules Furthman, Josef von Sternberg, S.K. Lauren Date Added: Oct 18, 2007 Comments: From the lips of one MAN to the arms of another! Summary: This film really shouldn't work. The story line is too far-feched, the songs too silly, the star too goregeous when supposedly a vagabond. BUT, it Does work, astoundingly, and the reason is that star, Marlene Dietrich. No other could pull this role off. She's both smolderingly sexy and maternal. Vamp, and housewife. Devoted mother, and kept woman. Pleny of contradictions here, and yet she moves through the film as the glue that holds the whole mess together. Of course, the part that this film is famous for is the "Hot Voodoo" number, where Dietrich emerges out a gorilla costume with native girls swaying in time in the background. What nerve! Nobody today would dare anything like that. Herbert Martshall is cast as the husband, and Cary Grant, in am early role, is cast as the swank lover. All it takes is a bit of suspension of disbelief, for some parts, anyway, and this is a movie to enjoy.

Blood Diamond Edward ZwickRated: R Writer: Charles Leavitt, C. Gaby Mitchell Date Added: Oct 19, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Freedom Summary: Leonardo DiCaprio puts a handsome face on an ugly industry: In parts of Africa, diamond mining fuels civil warfare, killing thousands of innocents and drafting preteen children as vicious soldiers. DiCaprio ("The Departed") plays Danny Archer, a white African soldier-turned-diamond-smuggler who gets wind of a large raw jewel found by Solomon Vandy, a native fisherman (Djimon Hounsou, "In America") recently escaped from enslavement by a brutal rebel leader. Archer offers a deal: He'll help Vandy find his war-scattered family if Vandy will share the diamond with him. Drawn into this web of exploitation is journalist Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly, "Little Children"), who agrees to help if Archer will tell her the details of how conflict diamonds make their way into the hands of the corporations who sell them to the Western world. DiCaprio is compelling because he never flinches from Archer's utter ruthlessness; Archer ends up doing the morally justifiable thing, but only because his desperate greed has led him to it. Hounsou and Connelly, though saddled with all the moral and political speeches, rise above the cant and keep the movie's treacherously formulaic plot rooted in human characters. But in the end, the story won't stick with you as much as the dead stillness in the child soldiers' eyes; the horror of African civil strife refuses to be contained by "Blood Diamond"'s uplifting message--and the movie is all the more potent as a result. One day she invites Masami Endo to join the group. As her friendship with Masami grows, she loses contact more and more with the others. She is impressed with Endo's greater knowledge of music and art, and although Endo proclaims that she is insignificant with no aim in life, Kayako says that she wishes that she could be like her new friend. Their feelings deepen beyond friendship and she proclaims her love for Endo on a lonely beach. The two become physically intimate but when summer comes Masami disappears and Kayako learns that she has gone to Tokyo to meet a married man with whom she had an affair the year before. An abortion had led to her being suspended from school. Feeling betrayed when Masami returns and lies about where she has been, Kayako keeps to herself and starts painting a still life, emulating Cezanne paintings in one of Masami's books. Although they reconcile and Kayako speaks of them going way to study together, her love of painting leads to her leaving for Tokyo alone to study art, while Masami remains behind. Masami sends a videotape showing a shot of the beach, and then the blue sea, proclaiming that unlike Kayako, this is all that she can do in an artistic sense.

Blue Collar Paul SchraderRated: R Writer: Paul Schrader, Leonard Schrader Date Added: Jun 16, 2010 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Whatever became of the "American Dream"? Summary: Paul Schrader had established his reputation as a screenwriter ("The Yakuza" and "Taxi Driver", among others) before embarking on his directorial debut. "Blue Collar" is the story of three working-class guys at the Checker auto plant who rob their local union office. Richard Pryor delivers a funny, passionate, seething performance in one of his rare dramatic roles as a rabble-rousing union man. Trapped by family worries and crippling back taxes, he dreams up the robbery after scoping out the joint and enlists his coworker and buddies, family man Harvey Keitel and high-living bachelor Yaphet Kotto, who are in similar financial straits. This is a strictly amateur-hour heist, and their successful getaway is the last bit of good luck in store for the trio. The robbery turns up no cash, only incriminating files, and the inept thieves are soon blackmailing the powerful union, which fights back with force, seduction, and murder. Schrader's first film has little of the polish or style he developed by "American Gigolo", but his portrait of lower middle class families in 1970s Detroit, interracial relations, and male camaraderie is sharp and insightful. His attention to detail shows in every frame and adds to the edgy material, which balances the thriller plot with social commentary about corruption, labor relations, and the lure of power. Schrader's later films show more subtlety and cinematic confidence, but time hasn't dimmed the power he unleashes in this angry working class drama.

Summary: Spencer Tracy won an Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan, who opens Boys Town and dedicates himself to helping juvenile delinquents go straight. Mickey Rooney plays one of the tougher kids, figuring out early on that Flanagan is nobody's fool. Warmhearted and inspiring, the film's inevitable sentimentality is nicely cut by Tracy's performance and a smart script by Eleanore Griffin and Dore Schary (who also won Oscars). A good film for all ages, directed by Norman Taurog ("Adventures of Tom Sawyer"). "--Tom Keogh"

Boyz 'N the Hood John SingletonRated: R Writer: John Singleton Date Added: Feb 8, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Increase the peace Summary: John Singleton, at the age of 23, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut film, "Boyz N the Hood". The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Angela Basset, Ice Cube, and Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first starring role in a feature film. Gooding plays Tre Styles, a teenager growing up in South Central Los Angeles. His father, Furious (Fishburne), is divorced and living away from Tre and his mother (Basset), but he's still involved in Tre's upbringing, teaching him the values of right and wrong and responsibility. Meanwhile, Tre's childhood buddies Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) are living their lives in terms of the epidemic of violence and poverty that has plagued their neighborhood. Ricky, a talented football player, strives to get a full athletic scholarship to college. If only his SAT scores were higher. Doughboy lives a life full of crime but still remains true to his friends. The obstacles that these three young men come across result in dire consequences, devastatingly avoidable and inevitable at the same time. "Boyz N the Hood" is a landmark film beyond its commercial success, presenting a portrait of South Central in the late '80s and early '90s as painted by Singleton (who grew up in that neighborhood), achieving accuracy and dramatic resonance in this story of at-risk youth. Brick Rian JohnsonRated: R Writer: Rian Johnson Date Added: Feb 8, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: A detective story. Summary: High school collides with hard-boiled film noir in the twisty, cunning "Brick". When he gets a mysterious message from his ex-girlfriend, a high school loner named Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, "Mysterious Skin") starts to dig into a crisscrossed web of drugs and duplicity, eventually getting entwined in the criminal doings of a teenage crime lord known as the Pin (Lukas Haas), his thuggish henchman Tugger (Noah Fleiss, "Joe the King"), and a mysterious girl named Laura (Nora Zehetner, "Fifty Pills"). "Brick" has not only the seductive, labyrinthine plot of a crime thriller by Dashiell Hammett ("The Maltese Falcon") or Raymond Chandler ("Farewell, My Lovely") but also a dense high-school version of hard-boiled lingo that's both comic and poetic. The movie unfolds with headlong momentum as Brendan manipulates, fights, and staggers his way through layers of high-school society. Gordon-Levitt is excellent; between this and the equally compelling "Mysterious Skin", he's left his "3rd Rock from the Sun" days behind. Also featuring Meagan Good ("Waist Deep") and Richard Roundtree ("Shaft"). "--Bret Fetzer"

Brokeback Mountain Ang LeeRated: R Writer: E. Annie Proulx, Larry McMurtry, Diana Ossana Date Added: Jul 29, 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Love Is A Force Of Nature Summary: A sad, melancholy ache pervades "Brokeback Mountain", Ang Lee's haunting, moving film that, like his other movies, explores societal constraints and the passions that lurk underneath. This time, however, instead of taking on ancient China, 19th-century England, or '70s suburbia, Lee uses the tableau of the American West in the early '60s to show how two lovers are bound by their expected roles, how they rebel against them, and the repercussions for each of doing so--but the romance here is between two men. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two itinerant ranchers looking for work in Wyoming when they meet and embark on a summer sheepherding job in the shadow of titular Brokeback Mountain. The taciturn Ennis, uncommunicative in the extreme, finds himself opening up around the gregarious Jack, and the two form a bond that surprisingly catches fire one cold night out in the wilderness. Separating at the end of the summer, each goes on to marry and have children, but a reunion years later proves that, if anything, their passion for each other has grown significantly. And while Jack harbors dreams of a life together, the tight-lipped Ennis is unable to bring himself to even consider something so revolutionary.

Brotherhood Of The Wolf Christophe GansRated: R Writer: Stéphane Cabel, Christophe Gans Date Added: Aug 1, 2007 Languages: French Subtitles: English Summary: In 1765 something was stalking the mountains of central France. A 'beast' that pounced on humans and animals with terrible ferocity. Indeed they beast became so notorious that the King of France dispatched envoys to find out what was happening and to kill the creature. By the end, the Beast of Gevaudan had killed over 100 people, to this day, no one is entirely sure what it was, wolf? hyena? or something supernatural? Whatever it was, shepherds had the same life-expectancy as the red-suited guys in 'Star Trek'. The Beast is a popular myth in France, albeit one rooted firmly in reality; somewhat surprisingly it is little known to the outside world, and perhaps incredibly it has never been made into a movie. Until now... Based on the true story of the Beast of the Gevaudan that terrorized France in the mid-XVIIIth century, the movie aims to tell first and explain afterwards. In the first part, a special envoy of the King of France, altogether biologist, explorer and philosopher, arrives in the Gevaudan region, in the mountainous central part of France. The Beast has been attacking women and children for months and nobody has quite been able to harm it or even take a good look at it. In the second part, our hero Chevalier de Fronsac will not only have to fight the Beast, but also ignorance, bigotry and conspiracy and will rely on two women, one an aristocrat, the other a prostitute, as well as the enigmatic Mani, an Iroquois he met in New-France (Canada).

Directed by Joshua Logan from George Axelrod's script of Inge's Broadway hit, the film stars Marilyn Monroe as the kind of woman who can't understand why she always brings out the worst in men. Written by actor/screenwriter Dan Futterman and based on selected chapters from the biography by Gerald Clarke, this mercilessly perceptive drama shows how Truman Capote brought about his own self-destruction in the course of writing "In Cold Blood", the "nonfiction novel" that was immediately acclaimed as a literary milestone. After learning of brutal killings in rural Holcomb, Kansas, in November 1959, Capote gained the confidence of captured killers Perry Smith (Clifton Collins, Jr.) and Dick Hickock (Mark Pellegrino) in an effort to tell their story, but he ultimately sacrificed his soul in the process of writing his greatest book. Hoffman transcends mere mimicry to create an utterly authentic, psychologically tormented portrait of an insincere artist who was not above lying and manipulation to get what he needed. Bennett Miller's intimate direction focuses on the consequences of Capote's literary ambition, tempered by an equally fine performance by Catherine Keener as Harper Lee, Capote's friend and the author of "To Kill a Mockingbird", who served as Capote's quiet voice of conscience. Spanning the seven-year period between the Kansas murders and the publication of "In Cold Blood" in 1966, "Capote" reveals the many faces of a writer who grew too close to his subjects, losing his moral compass as they were fitted with a hangman's noose. Casablanca Michael CurtizRated: PG Writer: Murray Burnett, Joan Alison, Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein, Howard Koch, Casey Robinson Date Added: Oct 17, 2007 Sound: Dolby Comments: Mysterious City of Sin and Intrigue ! Summary: A truly perfect movie, the 1942 "Casablanca" still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. "--Tom Keogh"

The Caveman's Valentine Kasi LemmonsRated: R Writer: George Dawes Green Date Added: Mar 11, 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Romulus Ledbetter lives on the edge. The view is incredible. Summary: Samuel L. Jackson gives a virtuoso performance in this intensely visual suspense film. Jackson stars as Romulus Ledbetter, a brilliant musician whose mental demons have driven him onto the streets. When Ledbetter finds a murdered man outside the cave he calls home one morning, he is compelled to find the real killer. While interesting enough to hold the viewer's attention, the mystery of "The Caveman's Valentine" is a distant third to Jackson's performance and the film's sumptuous visuals. The film is gorgeously shot, and lights and abstract images are effectively used to show Romulus's beautiful but tormented inner world. While the plot does take a silly leap of logic or two, Romulus's illness and the strain it puts on his family are sensitively and realistically handled. His all-too-real run-ins with his policewoman daughter are nicely contrasted with his visions of his ex-wife, who serves as a combination of Greek chorus and muse. If one is willing to suspend a little disbelief here and there, this picture is well worth a look. "--Ali Davis"

What waits in the shadows will invade your sanity. Summary: This movie packs an emotional punch. The tripped-out, drug-amped characters -portrayed by Jason Allen Wolfe, Eli DeGeer, and Amanda Booth - are entangled in a web of deceit and sexual enslavement. The story is represented beautifully with a mix of sexual and horrifying visuals coupled with well-acted roles that embody the downward spiral of drug and sex addictions. The directing combination of low-budget movie veteran Eric Stanze (SAVAGE HARVEST, ICE FROM THE SUN, SCRAPBOOK) and relative newcomer Robin Garrels (INSANIAC) lends to a new look for independent movies. The music score used, also adds to the whole experience, helping to immerse you in this twisted maze of a story. I have watched this movie several times and it holds up each time I watch it. I highly recommend this movie.

Summary: Ex-Golden Gloves fighter Danny Kenny has it all worked out. He'll turn pro to bankroll his brother's dream of writing a symphonic paean to the teeming city where they both live: New York. But life pulls the sidewalk out from under Danny when he's blinded during a brutal 15-round welterweight title bout. James Cagney plays Danny in this heart-tugging melodrama co-starring Ann Sheridan, Anthony Quinn, film-debuting Arthur Kennedy and in a rare acting turn before becoming a director, Elia Kazan. Among familiar studio players, there's an unbilled one: a vivid backlot and rear-screen Manhattan. "Sometimes we wonder," The New York Times' Bosley Crowther wrote, "whether it wasn't really the Warner brothers who got New York from the Indians, so diligent and devoted have they been in feeling the great city's pulse."

| 1186 | Crash | Paul Haggis | R | 2005 | Lions Gate | Drama | |
Crash Paul HaggisRated: R Date Added: Feb 13, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Movie studios, by and large, avoid controversial subjects like race the way you might avoid a hive of angry bees. So it's remarkable that "Crash" even got made; that it's a rich, intelligent, and moving exploration of the interlocking lives of a dozen Los Angeles residents--black, white, latino, Asian, and Persian--is downright amazing. A politically nervous district attorney (Brendan Fraser) and his high-strung wife (Sandra Bullock, biting into a welcome change of pace from "Miss Congeniality") get car-jacked by an oddly sociological pair of young black men (Larenz Tate and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges); a rich black T.V. director (Terrence Howard) and his wife (Thandie Newton) get pulled over by a white racist cop (Matt Dillon) and his reluctant partner (Ryan Phillipe); a detective (Don Cheadle) and his Latina partner and lover (Jennifer Esposito) investigate a white cop who shot a black cop--these are only three of the interlocking stories that reach up and down class lines. Writer/director Paul Haggis (who wrote the screenplay for "Million Dollar Baby") spins every character in unpredictable directions, refusing to let anyone sink into a stereotype. The cast--ranging from the famous names above to lesser-known but just as capable actors like Michael Pena ("Buffalo Soldiers") and Loretta Devine ("Woman Thou Art Loosed")--meets the strong script head-on, delivering galvanizing performances in short vignettes, brief glimpses that build with gut-wrenching force. This sort of multi-character mosaic is hard to pull off; Crash rivals such classics as "Nashville" and "Short Cuts". A knockout. "--Bret Fetzer"

Crooklyn Spike LeeRated: PG-13 Writer: Cinqué Lee, Joie Lee, Spike Lee Date Added: Aug 16, 2008 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Spike Lee's semiautobiographical, 1994 film about the good and bad times for a Brooklyn family in the '70s has passion and nostalgic good feeling, but it is also a mess of random reflections and arbitrary storytelling. The centerpiece of the movie is a little girl (Zelda Harris) who views the ups and downs of her parents' experiences (mom and dad are played by Delroy Lindo and Alfre Woodard), and who navigates the life of her neighborhood. Lee tosses in a lot of '70s detail (watching "The Partridge Family") and other diversions (Harris's journey through suburbia), but he has no master sensibility controlling the flow of it all. The film is more wearying than anything, although bright spots include Lindo's fine performance as a talented man suffering from irrelevance. "--Tom Keogh"

Derailed Mikael HåfströmRated: R Writer: Stuart Beattie, James Siegel Date Added: Oct 17, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Some lines should never be crossed. Summary: With a nasty villain and a plot twist that will take many viewers by surprise, "Derailed" is the kind of potboiler that's enjoyable in spite of its flaws. It's basically two-thirds of a good movie, with a convincing set-up and a barely plausible payoff that... well, you've just got to see it and decide for yourself. Like "Fatal Attraction", it's a good-enough thriller that turns infidelity into every man's nightmare, beginning when Charles (Clive Owen), a well-to-do Chicago advertising director with a sickly, diabetic daughter and a slightly troubled marriage, has a chance encounter with Lucinda (Jennifer Aniston), a lovely and quick-witted financial advisor who's also stuck in a marital rut. Their chemistry is instant (between both characters and stars), but their eventual hotel tryst is interrupted by a mugger (French actor Vincent Cassel at his vile, despicable best) who's out to milk Charles for every dollar he's got. Of course, one phone call to the police would solve everyone's problems, but as he did with "Collateral" (albeit more convincingly), screenwriter Stuart Beattie turns up the tension with such manipulative skill that you're willing to skate past the plot holes and go along for the ride. With lively supporting performances by rappers Xzibit and RZA, "Derailed" marks a commercially slick American debut for Swedish director Mikael Håfström, whose 2003 thriller "Evil" was a Best Foreign Film Oscar®-nominee. Dirty Mary Crazy Larry John HoughRated: PG Writer: Leigh Chapman, James H. Nicholson, Antonio Santean, Richard Unekis Date Added: Oct 19, 2007 Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: They don't call them that for nothing. Summary: Susan George ("Straw Dogs") is ex-groupie Mary and Peter Fonda ("Easy Rider") is wannabe-NASCAR driver Larry. They're thieves on the run from sheriff Vic Morrow ("The Blackboard Jungle"), who carries neither gun nor badge. According to director John Hough ("The Legend of Hell House"), his white trash cult classic was "an action picture with a lot of stunts." That about sums it up. The Tarantino favorite is slim on character development, but overstuffed with automobile-oriented action (most revolving around a 1969 Dodge Charger). Notable stunts include a game of chicken with a couple of 18-wheelers, a low-flying helicopter chase, and a death-defying leap over a moving bridge ("Speed" would up the ante with a bus). Adapted from the novel "The Chase", "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" also has one shocker of an ending. Adam Roarke, as levelheaded mechanic Deke, and an uncredited Roddy McDowall, as supermarket manager George, provide solid support. "--Kathleen C. Fennessy"

Disturbia D.J. CarusoRated: PG-13 Writer: Christopher B. Landon, Carl Ellsworth Date Added: Oct 22, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Every killer lives next door to someone Summary: Alfred Hitchcock fans may experience déjà vu upon exposure to this voyeuristic thriller. That's because director DJ Caruso ("The Salton Sea") and co-writer Carl Ellsworth ("Red Eye") use "Rear Window" as a jumping-off point before cherry-picking from more recent scare fare, like "The Blair Witch Project". In the prologue, 17-year-old Kale (Shia LaBeouf, "Holes") loses his beloved father to a car crash. A year passes, and he's still on edge. When a teacher makes a careless remark about his dad, Kale punches him out, and is sentenced to house arrest. After his mom (Carrie-Anne Moss, "Memento") takes away his Xbox and iTunes privileges, the suburban slacker spies on his neighbors to pass the time. In the process, he develops a crush on Ashley (Sarah Roemer, "The Grudge 2"), the hot girl next door, and becomes convinced that another, the soft-spoken Mr. Turner (David Morse, "The Green Mile"), is a serial killer. With the help of the flirtatious Ashley, practical joke-playing pal Ronnie (Aaron Yoo), and an array of high-tech gadgets, like cell-phone cameras and digital camcorders, Kale sets out to solve a major case without leaving his yard (a feat that would prove more challenging for a less affluent sleuth). In the end, it's pretty familiar stuff, but there are plenty of scares once Turner realizes he's being watched, and rising star LaBeouf, who next appears in Michael Bay's "Transformers", makes for an engaging leading man--despite his character's propensity for slugging Spanish instructors. --"Kathleen C. Fennessy"

| 1195 | Donnie Brasco | Mike Newell | Joseph D. Pistone, Richard Woodley, Paul Attanasio | R | 1997 | Sony Pictures | Drama |
Donnie Brasco Mike NewellRated: R Writer: Joseph D. Pistone, Richard Woodley, Paul Attanasio Date Added: Feb 28, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Donnie Brasco. Based On A True Story. Summary: Based on a memoir by former undercover cop Joe Pistone (whose daring and unprecedented infiltration of the New York Mob scene earned him a place in the federal witness protection program), "Donnie Brasco" is like a de- romanticized, de-mythologized version of "The Godfather". It offers an uncommonly detailed, privileged glimpse inside the world of organized crime from the perspective of the little guys at the bottom of Mafia hierarchy rather than from the kingpins at the top. "Donnie Brasco" is not only one of the great modern-day gangster movies to put in the company of "The Godfather" films and "GoodFellas", but it is also one of the great undercover police movies--arguably surpassing "Serpico" and "Prince of the City" in richness of character, detail, and moral complexity. Donnie (Johnny Depp, a splendid actor) is practically adopted by Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino), a gregarious, low-level "made" man who grows to love his young protégé like a son. (Pacino really sinks into this guy's skin and polyester slacks, and creates his freshest, most fully realized character since his 1970s heyday.) As Donnie acclimates himself to Lefty's world, he distances himself from his wife (a terrific Anne Heche) and family for their own protection. Almost imperceptibly his sense of identity slips away from him. Questioning his own confused loyalties, unable to trust anybody else because he himself is an imposter, Donnie loses his way in a murky and treacherous no-man's land. The film is directed by Mike Newell, who also headed up "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and the gritty, true crime melodrama "Dance with a Stranger". "--Jim Emerson"

| 1196 | The Doom Generation | Gregg Araki | Gregg Araki | Unrated | 1995 | Lions Gate | Drama |
The Doom Generation Gregg ArakiRated: Unrated Writer: Gregg Araki Date Added: Oct 16, 2007 Picture Format: Pan & Scan Comments: Sex. Mayhem. Whatever. Summary: Made for a fraction of the cost of Oliver Stone's similarly themed "Natural Born Killers", Gregg Araki's "The Doom Generation" is more persuasively outragous in its cultural satire, scarier in its violence, and more profound in its vision of a hate-fueled, media-drunk America seemingly determined to eat its young and dwell stupidly on their vengeance. Rose McGowan ("Scream"), James Duval ("Nowhere"), and Johnathon Schaech ("That Thing You Do!") star as a trio of friends (Schaech's character actually being a complete stranger who steps into their car and into their lives one club-hopping night) who end up on a sex-and-crime spree that draws the fixed stare of television coverage. Araki makes a case for their continuing innocence in a society whose anti-outsider malevolence is barely disguised in the media but is quite naked out in the heartland, where a punishing level of bigotry is not unknown. Araki's jokes and techniques are crude yet forceful, and his anger is absolutely clear where Stone's was obscured and overreaching. The climax is among the most shattering and enraged scenes of '90s cinema. The DVD includes cast information, a theatrical trailer, and French and Spanish subtitles. "--Tom Keogh"

Down in the Valley David JacobsonRated: R Writer: David Jacobson Date Added: Feb 28, 2007 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: Widescreen Comments: Sometimes it's hard to find your way... Summary: "Down in the Valley" falls short of the greatness it's striving for, but it's a fascinating film that's easily recommended. Serving as both star and co-producer, Edward Norton seized upon writer-director David Jacobsen's neo-western screenplay as an opportunity to play the kind of daring and challenging role that Hollywood rarely offers. Norton's considerable talent is fully engaged as he portrays Harlan Carruthers, a cowboy anachronism in California's San Fernando Valley, where his Stetson hat, old-fashioned manners, and wild-west romanticism provide an escape from his dreary life of dead-end jobs and fleabag motels. We can't tell if he's really a former ranch-hand from South Dakota or a delusional psychopath, and that turns "Down in the Valley" into a suburban variation of "Taxi Driver", with the threat of danger increasing as Harlan is befriended by Tobe (Evan Rachel Wood), a bored teenager who seduces Harlan for the sake of romantic adventure. Tension and suspense escalate even further as Harlan tangles with Tobe's suspicious and belligerently protective father (David Morse) and lonely 13-year-old brother (Rory Culkin), but Jacobsen's intriguing film grows problematic when it veers into mythic western territory. Struggling for present-day resonance with themes of rugged individualism and frontier manhood in an era when those qualities are virtually extinct, "Down in the Valley" reaches a climax that feels forced and unconvincing, but fine performances (especially by Norton) and Jacobsen's bold, risk-taking direction make this a film worth seeing."--Jeff Shannon"
