Summary: Robbed of all it's innate majesty and poetic vision,set in contemporary times among the Melbourne underworld and boiled down by writer Victoria Hill (who also plays Lady Macbeth) into a series of "Kill Bill" like bloody scenes, Sam Wright's "Macbeth" manages to turn Shakespeare's play into an Iambic Pentameter spoken episode of the "Night Stalker."
Sam Worthington gives us 100 ways to glower as Macbeth and the scene with the three witches (in this case not old, wizened hags but three bodacious young women) is laughable and audacious in its sheer lunacy.
"Macbeth" is shot like a BMW commercial: all bright and shiny with glistening surfaces and most of the players are saddled with dyed black hair and tight leather clothing.
All of this would not matter one whit if director Wright had infused the mise en scene with some humor or more importantly some insight into what Shakespeare was after in his play.
By all means check this version out if only to compare it to the gorgeous Welles version (newly reassembled as the "Chimes of Midnight") or even the straightforward though poetic Polanski one. Just be forewarned: a huge amount of Scotch is required to get you through this particularly difficult experience.

available than merely catching it by luck on TCM on their midnight Underground Cinema showcase. Though the production is more or less lower budget and the spoken words don't exactly line up with the movement of the lips, it's nonetheless vintage 60's crime with Cassavetes as great as ever, and Peter Falk playing the casino manager and lower level Mafiosi. There are some neat scenes of the San Francisco night life, and the action shifts to the Las Vegas strip with Cassavetes and his new bride Arlene (Britt Eklund) and the ruthless revenge of the Mafia as the movie becomes a pretty dark chase film through LA with Gena Rowlands getting a tough little part as the vise tightens.

Comments: A GIANT OF A MOVIE

Summary: Attempting to do for Westerns what his "Guns of Navarone" had done for World War II action epics, director J. Lee Thompson crafted "Mackenna's Gold" as a lavish, absurdly ambitious variation on Erich Von Stroheim's "Greed", resulting in a last-gasp Western so eager to encompass the genre's traditions that it turns into a big, silly, wildly entertaining mess. Gregory Peck surely had more serious intentions when he signed on, and he brings prestigious gravitas to his glum role as Marshall Mackenna, who gets shanghaied into searching for the gold-filled canyon of an elusive Apache legend. The rest of the 1969 film labors to undermine Peck's respectable demeanor; how else to explain Omar Sharif as a Mexican villain, Julie Newmar as a hot-blooded Apache temptress (with underwater nude scenes that were celebrated in "Playboy" magazine), and a jaw-dropping finale that's so ridiculous it's impressive in spite of itself?
Formerly blacklisted screenwriter Carl Foreman and composer Dimitri Tiomkin joined up to coproduce the film, and one can only imagine how Anthony Mann or Howard Hawks might've handled Foreman's sensible script. Thompson goes for scenic splendor, heavy action, and heavier emotions, casting everything at a fever pitch that's wildly enjoyable without betraying his "serious" intentions. A stable of Hollywood veterans (Eli Wallach, Raymond Massey, Edward G. Robinson, and others) appear in lively supporting roles--they're all dispatched in a garish Apache ambush--and Camilla Sparv is an ingénue with plenty of fighting attitude. Gold fever reaches its peak, along with some awesome special effects, and divine intervention reaches new heights of intensity. Top it off with José Feliciano's theme song, and you'll be in zany Western heaven. "--Jeff Shannon"

Summary: Max Baer's friendly fascist is one reason, but not the only one, to catch this disturbing 1974 film. In fact, Baer's smiling, upright sheriff seems a blood brother in some twisted sense to Mayberry's Andy Griffith. Based on fact, the movie portrays the misadventures of real-life brothers Alan and Jesse Vint, as they frolic through the 1950's South on their way to a date with the Army. Bad luck and Sheriff Baer however turn their joyride into a nightmare that finally ends in tragedy. The last scenes are a suspense-filled stunner. This is Baer's production and he uses it to observe the effects of gun culture, brutality, and race prejudice in fairly subtle fashion. Except for Geoffrey Lewis's overdone station attendant, the acting is first rate, with Joan Blackman a long way from her frothy Elvis movies. Special recognition should go to the casting of the two southern lowlifes who are the most convincing and sinister drifters I've seen, and are guaranteed to put chills up the spine. At times the script seems too deliberate, as though there are explanations for everything. Still, this is a first-rate thriller that deserves its cult status, and is ultimately a long, long way from the bucholic ideal of Sheriff Andy's Mayberry.

Summary: Inspector Ho (Andy On) has on his hands a dead case, a series of crimes linked to the gun of a missing cop. Desperate for answers, he turns to retired detective Bun (Lau Ching Wan) for help. Famous for his eccentric, but effective crime-solving methods, Bun was forced to leave the job years ago after he cut off his own ear and presented it as a gift to his boss. He seems to have gotten even madder with time, but Ho knows that only Bun can solve this case. Bun tells Ho that he can see through to one's inner personalities, to the weaknesses and vices that lead people astray. In Bun's eyes, these inner ghosts are living and breathing beings, revealed in their true form. Despite the protests of his wife (Kelly Lin), Bun agrees to take the case and his top suspect is the missing cop's partner (Gordon Lam), a man with seven personalities, walking side by side.

If his films are any indication, Johnnie To is perhaps as madly brilliant as the protagonist of his latest work Mad Detective. Teaming up with old partner Wai Ka Fai for the first time since 2003's Running on Karma, To serves up an intriguing police thriller with signature stylings and a heady psychological twist. Also overdue for a reunion is acclaimed actor Lau Ching Wan, in his first Johnnie To film since 2002's My Left Eye Sees Ghost. Fresh off his Best Actor win at the Hong Kong Film Awards last year, Lau Ching Wan oozes effortless, manic charisma in the titular role of the mad detective with special powers. Along with usual suspects Lam Suet, Gordon Lam, and Eddie Cheung, the film features a starring turn from up-and-coming action star Andy On (Invisible Target) and an interesting female cast of Kelly Lin (Triangle), Jay Lau (Gong Tau), Flora Chan (Dry Wood, Fierce Fire), and Jo Koo (The Longest Summer). Another sublime crime film from the master of the genre, Mad Detective confounds, challenges, enthralls, and simply begs for repeated viewings.

Summary: This is one of the most disturbing (and not to mention unintentionally funny) films I've ever seen. The dubbing is atrocious, the violence over-the-top, and the full frontal nudity extreme -- there is a LOT of male frontal nudity in this film; so much so that I suspect that either the writer or director was...well, INTO male full frontal nudity.

When watching this, notice how the gang members NEVER damage the hero's (?) car -- it probably wasn't in the budget. Perhaps it was even a loaner!

I'm giving this 4 stars simply because of how awful it is. It's so bad, it's funny.

Summary: Well with lo lieh and Lau kar leung both in my opinion in one of their top 2-3 performances of their careers, I would have to go with this one.

Now the whole monkey kung fu thing didn't have to go to this extreme, but it still works and you have a true master at the helm both directing and starring in this one. He is such a great martial arts master he certainly makes any film he performs in an instant classic. The kid little monkey is the one who shines in this one. i don't really want to tell you the story at all btu I did want to mention that there is a very gruesome scene but they actually used a bloody puppet so I it didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth or nothin. The fights in this one are not as plentiful as some fu films but there are like 5-6 REALLY REALLY good fights, including an ending you are that is the best definitely.


Now the picture for the red sun release that i am reviewing is BREATHTAKING. The remastered uncut(109 min.) version is rich in color, and letterboxed. The english dub is perfect except for Lo Lieh and Kara Hui's voice that seems to be a bit hollow in the first half. If ANYBODY freaking reads this then I urge you to type in red sun searching in the dvd's on the search engine here on amazon. And all the old school fu movies that say red sun NOT RED COMPANY(like killer army), these are movies like Fists of the White Lotus REMASTERED beautifully. You people need to check this stuff out cause for fu fans like me, these are the very best version you can get. They must be affiliated with celestial(red sun), cause their trailers are only for remastered shaw flicks and also I saw five venoms under the red sun label so freaking check it out people. It is a lazy way to buy dvd's cause we ALL should get a region free dvd player, but I can continue to be lazy until I sbnatch up all of these.

Summary: "Vacation for a Massacre" is yet another in the long string of (mostly Italian) films that noticeably imitate the 1972 US megahit "Last House on the Left", and this film by Fernando Di Leo (director of the infamous "Slaughter Hotel")is certainly one of the best. The plot is simple and familiar: An escaped convicted murderer (Joe Dallesandro)invades the cottage of a man (Gianni Macchia), his wife (Patrizia Bhen) and the wife's sister (Lorraine de Selle), and proceeds to torment this already dysfunctional trio with rape and violence. Di
Leo clearly made the most of the film's low budget by eliciting excellent performances from his cast, especially in the case of Dallesandro, who is known mostly for his constant full-frontal nudity in several Andy Warhol films, not his acting skills. While Dallesandro's work here is rather flat, Di Leo keeps Dallesandro's dialog to a minimum. This, coupled with the fact that Dallesandro has a talent for showing good expression with his eyes, and Di Leo never fails to include one of these shots when necessary to make up for other qualities lacking, makes the film succeed when, in another director's hands, it could have faltered due to a lack of directorial understanding of his actor. Macchia, who worked with Di Leo at least
twice before, and de Selle, who clearly enjoys her constant nudity as well, are pros at this and their unlikeable characters are nevertheless compelling thanks to their thoughtful performances. I am not familiar with Bhen's other roles, but in the final reel she manages to deliver the necessary winning performance that is repressed in the first half of the film. Another major asset is Luis Enriquez Bacalov's eccentric,
unnerving score, which ranges from classical (borrowing the theme from the superior 1971 film he scored entitled "The Designated Victim" with Tomas Milan) to near heavy-metal guitar riffs. The combination of the basic plot and Di Leo at the helm, knowing that his films are rarely pretty, ensures that the film is a gritty, sometimes necessarily unpleasant, but ultimately very satisfying exploitation film viewing
experience. The English-subtitled print available on a US bootleg does not look bad at all, but I would get it on a DVD-R and not a VHS, as the disc will retain the master's tape's sharper picture quality.

The Twins take a 3-0 lead in the 6th inning, but Billy hits a home run that ties the game at 3-3 in the 8th inning, but in the top of the 9th inning, with two outs, while the Twins are up to bat, and Doc is one strike away from striking out bullying home run hitter Carlos Liston, Huff has the stadium's lights turned off so the game can end with a tie rather than give the Buzz a chance to win in the bottom of the 9th, and the media says that the Twins were still outplayed by the Buzz. Huff now wants to bring Billy up to the Twins, even though Billy is not yet ready to go up to the Twins. Billy jumps on the opportunity and turns his back on Gus. Without Billy, the Buzz start losing again. With the Twins, Billy starts hitting poorly, proving Huff wrong about Billy. Gus manages to get the Buzz back on track, and Billy is sent back down to the Buzz, where Gus teaches Billy how to hit for a higher batting average. Gus leads the Buzz to a division title in their league, then Gus issues a challenge for Huff to bring the Twins to Buzz stadium for another game. The way Gus has issued the challenge, if the Twins win, he'll give his salary for the year to Huff, and if Gus and the Buzz beat the Twins, Gus can take over as the manager of the Twins. Summary: The Man Who Laughs is considered by many to be an essential silent film. Its use of the grotesque certainly makes an impact on the viewer. When Gwynplaine (Conrad Veidt) was a young boy, he was surgically forced to smile at all times as a reminder of the tyranny done to his father by those in power. As an heir to the throne, he was meant to be killed, but he manages to stay alive after being adopted by a showman. He is loved by a blind girl named Dea (Mary Philbin), but Gwynplaine's eerie appearance causes him a great deal of pain. His smile is put on display nightly for the townsfolk of the country for them to laugh at his ailment. When the rebellious duchess (Olga Baclanova) sets her sights on him, a new world of trouble and heartbreak opens up for Gwynplaine.



The message of the film is ambiguous. In some ways, it seems that one is to feel sorry for Gwynplaine who suffers from the smile inflicted upon him. At the same time, it is impossible not to be slightly put off by his appearance. The original choice for the part was Lon Chaney who doubtless would have been more sympathetic in the part. But was that what the film makers were going for? As it stands, The Man Who Laughs is an enjoyable and memorable film.



Also included on this DVD are some great extra features. One featurette talks about the making of the film. Another is a home video montage of many stars including Veidt. Finally, there are some photo galleries.

Summary: A popular genre in the teens and twenties can only be described as Hollywood Grotesque. It's half horror, half freakshow, and inheritance from the Victorian melodrama that many early hollywood films took their inspiration from.
The Man Who Laughs, based on the novel by Victor Hugo who also wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is a good example of this genre that essentially died with silent pictures.
The plot involves the child of an English nobleman. When his father rebels against King James, the king has the child's face carved into a permanent grin. The child, named Gwynplaine, joins a carnival. He grows up alongside Dea, a blind girl who loves him. Both Conrad Veidt and Mary Philbin were experienced with this sort of film. He had roles in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Waxworks, she was the leading lady of the Phantom of the Opera. Philbin's Phantom co-star, Lon Chaney, was originally slated to play the lead in this film but studio battles prevented it and Veidt, who came over from Germany to act in Barrymore's The Beloved Rogue, stepped in. Both Veidt and Philbin give rather good performances, particularly Veidt who, due to makeup, could only use the upper half of his face to express emotion.
Veidt is reunited with the director of Waxworks, Paul Leni. Leni also directed the classic haunted house film, The Cat and the Canary. Sadly, he died of blood poisoning a year after The Man Who Laughs was released.
The supporting cast is also good. Silent villain Sam de Grasse (a fixture of Douglas Fairbanks swashbucklers) does good work in his small role of King James. Olga Baclanova (who looks startlingly like Madonna) vamps with the best of them as the warped noblewoman Josiana.
The movie is silent with a synchronized period score featuring music and sound effects. I personally found the effects to be distracting and annoying especially when I was used to the silence of the beginning of the film. The music is good although some people disliked the fact that vocal music was used.
While this is an old movie, it is pre-code and therefore has some fairly hot scenes for the time although they are rather tame by modern standards. Parents should be cautious about showing this movie to younger children.
My only other complaint about the film is the ending. While I will not give it away, I felt that it was rushed and jarringly different in tone from the rest of the movie.
What makes this movie really interesting is the trivia. According to IMDB, the creators of Batman based The Joker on Veidt's face in this movie. There IS a resemblance!
In conclusion, this is an interesting movie that shows a now dead genre at its height. The DVD is packed with extras as had been restored. Wonderful news since I have only seen a fizzy VHS edition of this movie.
You will probably like this movie if: You enjoy early German cinema, you are a fan of any of the leads, you like early horror, you would like to see Veidt play a good guy for once.
You will probably not like this movie if: You are put off by the grotesque, you don't care for silent film, you prefer lighter movies.

Soo-jung can see this will make a good story and, with a little tweaking and a little fabricating, she produces the Superman Saves the World documentary which goes on to be a ratings hit. But the true story behind this "Superman," including the bullet and not the kryptonite that is lodged in his brain, helps the frosty, calculating Soo-jung to see what is truly important in life.
