Summary: This Jack Black vehicle seems, on the surface, like a perfect fit for the actor: an opportunity to showcase Black's unique style with the extreme facial gestures and exuberant physicality that have become his forte. Black plays Ignacio, a lowly cook in a monastery in central Mexico who feeds orphans by day, and wrestles in the town square at night. Ignacio teams up with Esqueleto (Hector Jimenez), a street urchin who tormented him, to form a tag-team duo that goes up against the strangest wrestlers Mexico has to offer. Besides doing it for money to feed the orphans, Ignacio is also fighting to win the forbidden affections of Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera) with predictable difficulty. While the movie has likeable characters and the plot is enjoyable enough, it can't overcome its plodding pace and formulaic structure enough to keep the movie interesting throughout. Jack Black is a very strong comedic actor, and the wrestling scenes offer plenty of chances for slapstick, physical comedy, but watching him run around in red briefs and blue tights amounts to half the laughs in the movie, and there's just not enough here for him to really work with. When he plays a more well-formed character, as in School of Rock and High Fidelity, his strengths really show. But in "Nacho Libre" he's saddled with a caricature. Weighed down by too much low-brow humor and a script that goes nowhere, "Nacho Libre" just can't make full enough use of Black's talents to overcome the obstacles. "--Daniel Vancini"

Summary: In the Pacific during World War 2, the officers live a comfortable life with good food, good drink and good quarters. The squad is commanded by a tough cynical Sergeant who takes no prisoners and even takes the gold from the teeth of the enemy dead. Summary: Actor-turned-director Cornel Wilde ("The Best Years of Our Lives") released this fascinating fever dream of a thriller in 1966, basing its terrifying story on the legendary escape of trapper John Colter from Blackfoot Indians. Wilde plays a laconic, big-game hunter (the script refers to him only as "Man") managing an ivory-gathering safari for an arrogant loudmouth who refuses to pay tribute to a local chief. The chief's tribe takes exception to this slight, capturing the hunters and subjecting them to sundry, nightmarish tortures. (The worst, arguably, is the baking of one poor fellow inside a head-to-toe clay suit.) Wilde's character is stripped bare and given a bit of a lead before being pursued by a party of spear-wielding men. For the next few days, the Man lives by his wits in the most violent surroundings, never far from the predator-prey cycle in the animal kingdom and even saving a boy from an attack by slave-traders on his village. Horrifying as the Man's journey becomes, there is something redemptive about Wilde's jaded character going back to nature in a radical fashion. Wilde the filmmaker expertly mingles stock footage of jungle beasts with his own bold images of a savage Eden, though nothing gets under one's skin quite like some of those torture scenes. The original fiction for Naraka 19 has attained quite a following online, resulting in some concerns from fans about how the film version would turn out. Allaying those fears is director Carol Lai, who follows up her last horror film, the under-appreciated The Third Eye with this new effort, utilizing state-of-the-art CG effects to render the fantastic levels of Hell visited by Rain and her roommates. The effects resemble those from the Pang Brothers hit Re-cycle, with hidden psychological pains bringing grisly imagery and the threat of violence to each character's individual Hell. Backing Gillian Chung is a promising cast, including Patrick Tam (Beast Cops), Shaun Tam (Star Runner), Yan Ng (Whispers and Moans), new EEG singer Vincy, models Maggie Li and Bonnie Xian, and finally Gillian Chung's Twin partner, Charlene Choi, in a very special cameo.

Comments: The Media Made Them Superstars.

Summary: Oliver Stone would like to have the last word on America's media culture of voyeurism and violence, but whatever he's trying to say in this grisly, unconventional movie comes across terribly garbled. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis play traveling serial killers who become television celebrities when a Geraldo-like personality (Robert Downey Jr.) turns their madness into the biggest story in the country. Stone extensively rewrote an original script by Quentin Tarantino, and he employs a mosaic of different film stocks, video, and pop pastiches to create a sense of blurred lines between visual phenomena. (The background on Lewis's character's life as an abused child, for instance, is presented as a sitcom starring Rodney Dangerfield.) But the result of these experiments is a pompous, even amateurish effort at grasping the reins of a real-life national debate. One almost wants to tell Stone to sit down and raise his hand next time if he thinks he has something to say. The controversial director would like "Natural Born Killers" to be nothing less than a monumental achievement, but it's one of the emptier entries in his filmography. "--Tom Keogh"

Summary: Look there are some very good sports movies out there and most of them are so serious that they are boring. This is one of those sports movies in the vein of MAJOR LEAGUE or THE REPLACEMENTS that when it shows up on tv, you can't help but watch it. Now I am from Texas so this movie takes on special meaning to me and that makes it funnier. Heck sit back and root for this bunch of loveable loosers. Enjoy the comic slam at the college administrators. Scott Bakula is an under appreciated comic actor and Sinbad is a hoot. So just watch it and "PARTAY!"

Summary: I'm not sure about the "Not available Yet" tag on this item - it certainly IS out. I own it. In fact, I was logging on hoping to sell it!

That being said, the movie is exactly as advertised - Ed Wood soft porn. You know you're on familiar territory when the "actors" begin our little romp with references to Bela Legosi.

Is there a plot worth reviewing in a movie like this? Well... is there EVER in an Ed Wood film? You don't watch a movie like this for the quality, the acting, the writing or... *Especially* the porn. You watch it because Ed is so lovingly bad, and so thoroughly consistant, it's like spending time with an old, slightly insane friend. All the standard props are here - undead, slightly dead, mostly dead (and an almost erotic lesbian scene). But in the end one star is all it gets, and is probably more than it deserves. Which would probably thrill Ed. "One star? GREAT! I'll get 1 1/2 next time!" Gotta love Ed.

Summary: Some pundits called it a flawed, exploitative action film that glamorized drug dealing and the luxury of a lucrative criminal lifestyle, spawning a trend of films that attracted youth gangs and provoked violence in theaters. Others hailed it as a breakthrough movie that depicted drug dealers as ruthless, corrupt, and evil, leading dead-end lives that no rational youth would want to emulate. However you interpret it, "New Jack City" is still one of the first and best films of the 1990s to crack open the underworld of cocaine and peer inside with its eyes wide open. It's also the film that established Wesley Snipes as an actor to watch, with enough charisma to bring an insidious quality of seduction to his role as coke-lord Nino Brown, and enough intelligence to portray a character deluded by his own sense of indestructible power. Director Mario Van Peebles stretched his otherwise-limited talent to bring vivid authenticity and urgency to this crime story, and subplots involving a pair of tenacious cops (Ice-T, Judd Nelson) and a recovering coke addict (Chris Rock) provide additional dramatic tension. Although some critics may hesitate to admit it, "New Jack City" deserves mention in any serious discussion about African American filmmakers and influential films. "--Jeff Shannon"

Heather Langenkamp, star of the original film, plays Heather Langenkamp, an actress and mother wracked with nightmares as Los Angeles is rocked with unexplained earthquakes. Meanwhile, her son starts sleepwalking and croaking Freddy Krueger threats. Is it a coincidence that Wes Craven (playing himself) is turning his own troubled dreams into a new screenplay, which he calls "a sort of nightmare in progress"? According to his visions, the imaginary Freddy has become the embodiment of ancient evil and is trying to break out of his movie prison and into the physical world. It's a rather literal and glib explanation, but words have never been Craven's strong suit. His central thesis, the cultural importance of stories, is more resonant in the web of imagery arising from dreams, movies, and the subconscious. Robert Englund and John Saxon play themselves and their movie characters (though this Freddy is decidedly less wisecracking and more demonic). It's a thoughtful, imaginative, and often gripping modern horror film that echoes with suggestions of "The Exorcist" and "Poltergeist". Summary: Richard Widmark never had better exercise for his Cagney-like bouncing-ball energy than "Night and the City", a classic film noir about a hustler's meteoric flame-out. Although acknowledged as one of the great noir pictures, it's actually set and shot in London, which gives an exotic, displaced novelty to the usual noir universe. Widmark's performance as Harry Fabian is a jibbering, wheedling, giggling tour de force, as Harry schemes his way to setting up a wrestling match and finally establishing himself as a "somebody." Instead, he manages to irritate the underworld heavies (memorably, Herbert Lom and Francis L. Sullivan) whose fingers are already deeply into the criminal pie. Gene Tierney and Googie Withers are the women--one good, one bad--who witness Harry's descent. This was director Jules Dassin's final project for a Hollywood studio before the blacklist forced him out, and he packs the film with tortured camera angles and spidery noir shadows; the movie's a real visual clambake. This is the jaundiced vision of director Adam Rifkin, best known for the raucously enjoyable "Detroit Rock City" and the cult curiosity "The Dark Backward". He's corralled some good people for this low-budget offering (Natasha Lyonne and Ann Magnuson as hookers, Vinnie Jones as a cruel pimp), but the lion's share of screen time goes to a pair of small-time crooks (Donnie Montemarano and Vinny Argiro) planning to split for Vegas in the morning. It's diverting for a while, but the bleached-sepia look and unrelenting rancidity take their toll, grinding the picture down. Even a soft-shoe shuffle for Fayard Nicholas (of the awesome Nicholas Brothers), a grace note if there ever was one, can't lift the movie out of its determined sense of gloom. "--Robert Horton"

Summary: "A Night in Casablanca" may not qualify as a Marx Brothers classic, but it's certainly the best of their latter-day comedies. "This picture is funnier than all but a handful of their earlier ones," wrote the usually cantankerous Pauline Kael, and she's right. "The Big Store" would have been the final Marx movie, but that disappointment, and an attractive new deal with United Artists, prompted the Marx trio to bring freshly anarchic energy to this post-war spoof of wartime intrigue, prompting Warner Bros. (producers of "Casablanca") to threaten legal action over the title, to which Groucho responded, "I am sure that the average movie fan could learn in time to distinguish between Ingrid Bergman and Harpo." As it happens, "Night" bears only passing resemblance to the Bergman/Bogart classic, with Groucho playing the new manager of a hotel in Casablanca, where several previous managers have been murdered while a scheming villain (Marx regular Sig Rumann) plots to steal the hotel's cache of Nazi treasure. Chico and Harpo are up to their usual antics (including piano and harp interludes, respectively), and they all give Rumann the runaround in the film's funniest and most perfectly choreographed scene. The story is simple: Radiation from a fallen satellite has caused the dead to walk, and hunger for human flesh. Once bitten, you become one of them. And the only way to kill one is by a shot or blow to the head. We follow a group holed up in a small farmhouse who are trying to fend off the inevitable onslaught of the dead. Summary: "Night Watch" is that rare film that--like "The Matrix"--is not only visually dazzling but creates an intriguing, seductive, and thrilling alternative world. A young man named Anton, after dabbling in black magic to bring back the wife who left him, discovers that the world is populated by fantastical Others (vampires, shape-shifters, witches, and more) who have chosen sides--Light or Dark--in an epic battle. A truce has been declared; both sides watch the other to ensure the truce is maintained. But a prophecy has predicted that a powerful Other will tilt the balance, and Anton--who is himself an Other--finds himself crucial to the prophecy's fulfillment. There's no question that "Night Watch" has weaknesses. Numerous plot holes get glossed over by pell-mell pacing, the visual conception of the apocalyptic battle between Light and Dark is curiously pedestrian (a bunch of knights fighting a bunch of guys in fur with swords--what happened to their various powers?), and more--but, much like similar problems with "The Matrix", it doesn't matter.
The alternative world "Night Watch" presents is so rich with possibilities that it takes on a life of its own, both as an imaginative universe and as a vivid metaphor for the moral complexities of our own lives--for example, though the forces of Light claim to be good, their often brutal actions call their virtue into question, and the forces of Dark make some compelling moral arguments on the topic. The movie is so overstuffed with ideas that many don't get fleshed out, but that only contributes to the sense of vitality and unexplored dimensions. Even the subtitles are used creatively. The impending sequels (this is the first film of a trilogy) may--like "The Matrix"--take all the stimulating possibilities "Night Watch" raises and drag them into the toilet, but for the moment, this is the sort of electric excitement that blockbuster movies promise but so rarely deliver. Summary: The long-awaited emergence of "Nightmare Alley" into the light of DVD should achieve two things: make a legendary film noir available to a new generation, and restore the horrific charge to the lately watered-down term "geek", a concept that once had the power to give people very bad dreams indeed.
To his lasting credit, Tyrone Power--20th Century Fox's extraordinarily handsome but not terribly interesting star of the '30s and '40s--begged for the chance to play Stan Carlisle, the predatory charmer who snakes his way through this bracingly unwholesome story. A spieler for--and lover of--carnival mind reader Zeena (Joan Blondell), he displays uncanny skill at "reading" the susceptible rubes, including a tough sheriff who turns to jelly after Stan psychs him out. Once Stan's mastered the intricate code used in Zeena's act, he's set to dump her for the younger, sexier Molly (Coleen Gray) and go bigtime as nightclub psychic "Stanton the Great." After that, it's only a blasphemous bank shot to superstardom as a miracle worker with his own tabernacle and radio show.
Few '40s films ventured as deeply into cynicism as "Nightmare Alley", or dealt so frankly with sexuality (with ripplings of polymorphous perversity yet) and power-tripping. The movie's rhythm is uncertain and Jules Furthman's screenplay telegraphs things, but the overall tone is remarkable, as are individual sequences: the freaky forced marriage of Stan and Molly in accordance with carny morality, and a creepy night scene in a park when Stanton the Great raises a ghost for a high-society client. Cinematographer Lee Garmes's chiaroscuro creates a relief map of the carnival world and what passes for life there. As for the geek... well, you'll find out what "geek" means. Stan does. Summary: NINJA VS. SHAOLIN GUARDS is one of a handful of delirious kung fu fests from the 1980s starring the phenomenal Alexander Lo Rei (aka Alexander Lou). The
others include NINJA FINAL DUEL, SHAOLIN VS. LAMA, MAFIA VS. NINJA, and NINJA HUNTER (aka WUTANG V NINJA).Unlike the better-known NINJA FINAL DUEL, this one actually boasts a real plot. Alexander and his three Shaolin brothers– all monks from Shaolin Temple-embark on a mission to get the Golden Sutra document to Tibet after the Shaolin Abbot is killed by the monks' traitorous teacher. The teacher has ninjas and assassins at his beck and call and all manner of costumed gangs attack the monks as they make their way to Tibet through one long scrawny forest (with snow in some sequences) and an occasional mountain
road (all most likely shot in Taiwan). We never see the characters stop to eat.
One of the monks has a cousin, a girl named Ah Mei who joins them after her father has been killed by one of the monks' enemies. (She's played by a
beautiful actress who's always perfectly coiffed and made up for each shot, despite the rigors of their trip.) The group finally reaches the Tibetan temple where they're supposed to take the Golden Sutra. The ending is a letdown, since there isn't much of a temple or much attempt to make the location look like Tibet.Despite some comic bits by the cousin monk, it's pretty much non-stop kung fu throughout, including some of the wildest extended battles I've seen in
a pre-1990s HK kung fu film. Straight kung fu is mixed with occasional wire work and lots of gratuitous acrobatics. One scene has them fight ghosts in
a cemetery.
Overall, the English dubbing is far better than average. The voice actors really act, especially the one who does Ah Mei, who performs a great grieving scene over the death of her father where she lashes out at the
monks. Although the Ocean Shores video release is full-frame, it's a high quality print and transfer.

But the film's credulity is lost when Rafelson fails to convince us that Jack's honor-bound refusal to escape, despite a prime opportunity while nuzzling the defenseless Milla, is a good and honorable thing. Summary: "The film opens in Tokyo with a shot of a small sidewalk-stand and the hopeless efforts of the two main protagonists to sell a health drink named "Akajiru" (a play on the popular "Aojiru" product). The tone is set for the futility to come. Daisuke (Hiroshi Yamamoto) is in debt five million yen (over US$35,000) and his girlfriend Hisako (Kotera) is along for the ride down. Moments later we're "escaping" in small motorboat heading for an unnamed, sparsely populated island. After many unsuccessful years in Tokyo, Daisuke is going home to ply his wares. He outlines his master business plan for his bewildered father and the story is on its way. We're quickly introduced to two of Daisuke's former classmates; highly eccentric (bordering on Tourettic) grocery-store manager Ozaki (Takeshi Yamamoto) and highschool-era object of affection Madoka (Hoso), now a fuzoku (sex industry) worker. Daisuke and Hisako try to convince Ozaki to sell Akajiru through his shop, but he sees through their ploy. Next up is Daisuke's cousin, who works at a large food company with his father, but all they can present him with is a monogrammed uniform. "I'd rather fucking die than work in this place", he spits. As the odds mount against their efforts to get out of debt, we flash back to more innocent, optimistic days in the characters' lives."
