Summary: Molly Shannon gives a strange and strangely touching performance in "Year of the Dog". A quiet secretary named Peggy (Shannon, "Superstar", "Good Boy!") goes into a tailspin when her beloved dog Pencil dies, leading her to flirt with dating, veganism, animal rights activism, and violence. But though the plot may sound shapeless, the movie is sharp and focused, cutting to the bone of every character's obsessions and neuroses. Yet, though extremely funny, "Year of the Dog" isn't strictly satirical--writer/director Mike White (writer of "The Good Girl" and "Chuck & Buck") doesn't pass judgment on his characters, no matter how irrational or appalling their behavior may be. The movie has a cool empathy, a wistful yet unsparing glance at human weakness. The entire cast--which includes Laura Dern ("We Don't Live Here Anymore"), John C. Reilly ("Boogie Nights"), Regina King ("Ray"), and Peter Sarsgaard ("Boys Don't Cry")--walk a fine line between painfully real and comically absurd. Summary: Redemption for director Michael Cimino and burgeoning stardom for actor Mickey Rourke were on the agenda when "Year of the Dragon" was released in 1985, and even if those things didn't quite come to pass, the result was nevertheless an entertaining, at times even compelling film. Cimino, seven years removed from his Oscar triumph "The Deer Hunter" and five years past the debacle that was (and still is) "Heaven's Gate", made a move back into the mainstream with this violent tale about New York's Chinatown, where gangs and heroin-dealing Chinese "triads" hold sway--at least until police captain Stanley White comes on the scene, fiercely determined to put the bad guys out of business. As portrayed by Rourke, White is arrogant, boorish, and bullheaded, a thoughtless jerk who puts anyone who cares about him in mortal danger, all of which we're supposed to forgive because he served in Vietnam and is so righteously intent on doing his job. Problem is, White is almost completely unlikable, rendering his relationships with his long-suffering wife (Caroline Kava) and his TV reporter girlfriend (a wooden Ariane) implausible in the extreme. Add to that a script (by Cimino and Oliver Stone) filled with stilted, macho dialogue and a level of facile racism and sexism that would be unacceptable by new millennium standards, and you've got a tough sell. Still, Cimino knows how to direct the action sequences, and he's able to sustain a good level of tension as the story builds toward its inevitable confrontation between White and young crime lord Joey Tai (John Lone, channeling Al Pacino in "The Godfather: Part II"). And the aftermath? Cimino made only four movies in the ensuing twenty years, none of them exactly blockbusters, while Rourke sank into a self-inflicted oblivion from which he has yet to recover. Not exactly the hoped-for outcome, but neither of them should be ashamed to have "Year of the Dragon" on his resume. "--Sam Graham"

Summary: This film was made by several people envolved
with Jet Li's Shaolin Temple trilogy and it
will be fairly easy to pick out some faces (sorry,
don't have the names at my fingertips).
The story is about a swordsman who's village is
caught between warring feudal lords (I believe there
are three groups, all plotting to wipe each other
out). Our swordsman is more or less non-partisan until his wife and daughter are killed. Ironically,
all the warlords want him to join their forces on
account of his indredible skills, but are willing to
resort to any means if he won't join them.
The tone of the story is somewhat downbeat, and there
are no surprises in terms of plot, but the action is
pletiful and we see some great drunken sword!
World Video's version of this is widescreen (1.8.5)
and offers english dub or cantonese (but no subs!!!!!).
This movie was filmed with a pretty serious budget and we can tell on account of the large armies and elaborate costums. The print is sharp and well preserved.
Worth checking out!

Comments: The forces of good! The forces of evil!

Summary: The singing group, The Beatles, at the height of their popularity, made this cartoon of a land that is taken over by the Blue Meanies. They are recruited by an escapee to come and bring joy (and music) back to the land. The techniques are quite psychedelic in the cartoons and much care was taken to have the walks and mannerisms of the individual Beatles cartoons match the originals.

Summary: This semi-comic 1961 film by legendary director Akira Kurosawa ("Rashomon", "Ran") was inspired by the American Western genre. Kurosawa mainstay Toshirô Mifune ("The Seven Samurai") plays a drifting samurai for hire who plays both ends against the middle with two warring factions, surviving on his wits and his ability to outrun his own bad luck. Eventually the samurai seeks to eliminate both sides for his own gain and to define his own sense of honor. "Yojimbo" is striking for its unorthodox treatment of violence and morality, reserving judgment on the actions of its main character and instead presenting an entertaining tale with humor and much visual excitement. One of the inspirations for the "spaghetti Westerns" of director Sergio Leone and later surfacing as a remake as "Last Man Standing" with Bruce Willis, this film offers insight into a director who influenced American films even as he was influenced by them. Summary: Yongary is another Godzilla clone, only this time made in Korea. This is Korea's first kaiju entry, and even though a lot of things are borrowed from Godzilla and Gamera, the movie is pretty good. The story is that earthquakes start to happen around Korea and they eventually find out it's not earthquakes but really Yongary moving around under the Earth. Yongary goes around all kaiju and begins to attack buildings while the citizens run in terror. It is later found out that Yongary is after one thing, oil. He eats oil just like Gamera eats fire. With him wrecking the city, he must be stopped and fast. Overall, I was impressed with the special fx, some parts were cheesy, in the movie, when the buildings would collapse, fire would break out which I thought was a neat touch. Yongary himself was pretty cool, he could breathe fire like Showa Gamera, but he also has a horn on his nose that could shoot out lasers, which was really cool. He cut one of the airplanes attacking him in half with his nose laser. The movie also features the infamous Yongary dance. On the movie, when Yongary wakes up he starts to dance! It plays 60's music as Yongary gets his freak on! I won't tell the complete story, don't want to spoil the entire story for those who haven't seen it. After Godzilla and Gamera, I would say that Yongary is the next best kaiju created by a different company. If you love kaiju movies, you'll eat this up and love it as much as Yongary loves oil!

She won the previous award last year for her role in My Mother, the Mermaid.

You Are My Sunshine is a Korean movie that may try to answer the cliched question: what is love? This romantic drama was released in Korea on the September 23rd 2005. This long awaited movie is directed by Park Jin-pyo and it is his comeback movie as a director: already the signs are promising since this movie sold more than 1 million tickets in Korea.
