Comments: A love story between a man, a country, the people he led and the woman he loved.

Summary: Considering that Sylvester Stallone's first film of any real distinction was "Rocky", an Academy Award winner for best picture and an instant classic, it's a safe bet that he had free rein when it came to his next project. In "F.I.S.T." (released in 1978), he chose a vehicle that matched him with a big-time director (Norman Jewison of "In the Heat of the Night" and "The Thomas Crown Affair" renown), a screenwriter on the verge of stardom (Joe Eszterhas, whose future would include "Flashdance" and "Basic Instinct"), and veteran actors like Rod Steiger, Peter Boyle, and Tony Lo Bianco. Yet while "F.I.S.T." is filmmaking on a grand scale, it also has the underlying themes that made the Rocky Balboa saga such a hit, particularly the plight of the common man as he struggles to maintain his dignity in the face of daunting odds. Stallone portrays Johnny Kovak, a blue-collar worker in late 1930s Cleveland who joins the nascent Federation of Inter-State Truckers (the Teamsters, basically) and rises up through the ranks until, a couple of decades later, he becomes the union's head honcho. Along the way, his ambitions lead to an alliance with organized crime, and while Kovak is an essentially decent fellow, the compromises he's made eventually catch up to him in the form of an investigation by a grandstanding, blowhard U.S. Senator (Steiger) and big trouble with an oily mob boss (Lo Bianco). All of that takes quite a while to play out; at 145 minutes, the movie is too long, especially considering that Jewison and Eszterhas (Stallone co-wrote the script) take an approach that's no more nuanced and subtle than, well, a flying fist. It also seems somewhat dated; viewing it now, in an era when CGI and other effects wizardry would have greatly enhanced some of the bigger scenes (a truckers rally in Washington, confrontations between union members and strike-breaking thugs), one is reminded more of a '70s TV movie that the epic the filmmakers clearly intended to create. Strangely enough, his personality seemingly begins to change after he puts on the mask as if the mask has influenced his personality. His new identity does not enable him to reintegrate into society after all. A subplot is inserted in fragments. A good-natured young woman, the right side of whose face is disfigured, has been hurt by others' inquisitive eyes and insults, and has been shunned by men. She asks her older brother, the only man who understands her pain and solitude, to make love to her, hiding from him the intent of killing herself after then.

Summary: The classic science fiction novel by Ray Bradbury was a curious choice for one of the leading directors of the French New Wave, François Truffaut. But from the opening credits onward (spoken, not written on screen), Truffaut takes Bradbury's fascinating premise and makes it his own. The futuristic society depicted in "Fahrenheit 451" is a culture without books. Firemen still race around in red trucks and wear helmets, but their job is to start fires: they ferret out forbidden stashes of books, douse them with gasoline, and make public bonfires. Oskar Werner, the star of Truffaut's "Jules and Jim", plays a fireman named Montag, whose exposure to "David Copperfield" wakens an instinct toward reading and individual thought. (That's why books are banned--they give people too many ideas.) In an intriguing casting flourish, Julie Christie plays two roles: Montag's bored, drugged-up wife and the woman who helps kindle the spark of rebellion. The great Bernard Herrmann wrote the hard-driving music; Nicolas Roeg provided the cinematography. "Fahrenheit 451" received a cool critical reception and has never quite been accepted by Truffaut fans or sci-fi buffs. Its deliberately listless manner has always been a problem, although that is part of its point; the lack of reading has made people dry and empty. If the movie is a bit stiff (Truffaut did not speak English well and never tried another project in English), it nevertheless is full of intriguing touches, and the ending is lyrical and haunting. Summary: This film, about a downsized engineer (Michael Douglas) who goes ballistic, triggered a media avalanche of stories about middle-class white rage when it was released in 1993. In fact, it's nothing more than a manipulative, violent melodrama about one geek's meltdown. Douglas, complete with pocket protector, nerd glasses, crewcut, and short-sleeved white shirt, gets stuck in traffic one day near downtown L.A. and proceeds to just walk away from his car--and then lose it emotionally. Everyone he encounters rubs him the wrong way--and a fine lot of stereotypes they are, from threatening ghetto punks to rude convenience store owners to a creepy white supremacist--and he reacts violently in every case. As he walks across L.A. (now there's a concept), cutting a bloody swath, he's being tracked by a cop on the verge of retirement (Robert Duvall). He also spends time on the phone with his frightened ex-wife (Barbara Hershey). Though Douglas and Duvall give stellar performances, they can't disguise the fact that, as usual, this is another film from director Joel Schumacher that is about surface and sensation, rather than actual substance. What better way to launch "Family Guy"'s sixth season and commemorate "Star Wars"' 30th anniversary than with this double-length Very Special Episode, a full-scale, awesomely animated spoof that recasts George Lucas' saga with "Family Guy"'s galaxy of characters: Chris (Seth Green) is Luke; Lois (Alex Borstein) is Princess Leia; Peter (Seth McFarlane) is Han Solo, but not, as expected, Jabba the Hut; Brian (Seth, again) is Chewbacca; Quagmire (and again, Seth) is C3PO; Cleveland is R2D2; Herbert, the creepy senior pedophile, is Obi-Wan (both voiced by Mike Henry); and, of course, Stewie (Seth, already) is Darth Vader ("My diapers have gone over to the dark side"). Poor Meg is reduced to a cameo as the hideous reptilian creature that haunts the garbage compactor. "Blue Harvest" is reverently faithful to "A New Hope", while engaging in typical "Family Guy" pop-culture references (everything from those old Grey Poupon commercials to "Doctor Who", "Airplane", "Dirty Dancing", and "Deal or No Deal") and bizarre digressions (the iconic opening crawl detours into an appreciation of a "way naked" Angelina Jolie in "Gia"). Along for the wild ride are Judd Nelson, who contributes a voice cameo as John Bender for a "Breakfast Club" gag, Rush Limbaugh railing against futuristic affirmative action on Tatooine talk radio, and Beverly D'Angelo and Chevy Chase as the vacationing Griswolds observing the rebellion from their orbiting station wagon. A "Star Wars" spoof in 2007 isn't exactly uncharted territory. As Chris Griffin notes in this episode's final moments, "Robot Chicken" brilliantly did it months earlier (and let us not forget Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs" from 1987; or, on second thought...). But the Force is strong with "Family Guy", and who could resist the opportunity to hear the Muzak playing in a Death Star elevator? --"Donald Liebenson"

Summary: "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" is another entertaining romp for the Marvel-superhero franchise. Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd), is treading on thin ice when his fiancée, Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba), thinks he's more interested in a series of cosmic phenomena occurring around the earth than in the preparations for their upcoming wedding. Sorry, ladies, but Reed is right. The disturbances are caused by a surge of cosmic power from a mysterious being called the Silver Surfer (an all-CGI creation, modeled by Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne), who not only zooms around the skies on his board, but also has enough power to fight the FF, sometimes by turning their own power against them, not only mixing up Sue and Reed, but also Johnny Storm, the Human Torch (Chris Evans), and Ben Grimm, the Thing (Michael Chiklis). But that's not the worst of it. The Surfer is only an opening act, a herald looking for planets that his master, Galactus, can consume for his sustenance.
With its initial installment, "Fantastic Four" established itself as the superhero franchise that didn't take itself too seriously, and that continues here. There are numerous moments of laugh-out-loud humor, and the most angst they suffer is whether Sue and Reed will ever be able to live a normal family life. (That, and whether they'll ever really get married, of course.) If "Fantastic Four" were a normal superhero franchise, the ending would be a knock-down drag-out war with Galactus, featuring the FF in a colossal battle for the planet Earth and the lives of everyone on it. "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" just doesn't do that, and we don't quite get the payoff we expected. Effects are dazzling, but the Surfer looks too metallic, more like a skyriding T-1000 robot. "--David Horiuchi"
On the DVD Are you getting tired of big movies initially coming out on substandard DVDs only to be released in better versions later? No such worries with the Power Cosmic Edition of "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer", which delivers the goods. The double-sided disc 1 has both widescreen and full-screen editions of the movie, with two commentary tracks. On the first, director Tim Story talks about FF inside jokes and what had to be cut out of the movie. The second combines producer Avi Arad (has anyone recorded more superhero DVD commentaries?), screenwriter Don Payne, and editors Peter S. Elliot and William Hoy (only the last two sound like they were actually in the room at the same time) covering some of the same ground: comic-book references, special effects, etc. On disc 2 are five extended/deleted scenes (almost 10 minutes total) with commentary by Story, including a longer title sequence and some comic relief. "Family Bonds" is a 46-minute "fly on the wall" documentary that follows the crew as they scout locations, test early special effects, and then work with the cast. There's a multi-angle look at the Fantasticar and five featurettes (some of which are more substantial than you'd expect for that term). Topics include the development of the Fantasticar (10 minutes), the Surfer effects (15 minutes), the history of the Surfer in comic books (39 minutes, with interviews of Stan Lee, Jim Starlin, and Ron Marz, and Lee describes himself as his own biggest fan!), the Thing suit (11 minutes), and the music score (four minutes). Comments: The screen's most fantastic voyage

Summary: "2001: A Space Odyssey" took the world on a mind-bending trip to outer space, but "Fantastic Voyage" is the original psychedelic inner-space adventure. When a brilliant scientist falls into a coma with an inoperable blood clot in the brain, a surgical team embarks on a top-secret journey to the center of the mind in a high-tech military submarine shrunk to microbial dimensions. Stephen Boyd stars as a colorless commander sent to keep an eye on things (though his eyes stay mostly on shapely medical assistant Raquel Welch), while Donald Pleasance is suitably twitchy as the claustrophobic medical consultant. The science is shaky at best, but the imaginative spectacle is marvelous: scuba-diving surgeons battle white blood cells, tap the lungs to replenish the oxygen supply, and shoot the aorta like daredevil surfers. The film took home a well-deserved Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Director Richard Fleischer, who turned Disney's 1954 "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" into one of the most riveting submarine adventures of all time, creates a picture so taut with cold-war tensions and cloak-and-dagger secrecy that niggling scientific contradictions (such as, how do miniaturized humans breathe full-sized air molecules?) seem moot. --"Sean Axmaker"

Summary: "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" has all the elements that spelled success for its predecessors: Speed, sex, and minimal dialogue. The plot doesn't need explication; it's a nonsensical series of confrontations and standoffs that serve to get us from one race to another. "Tokyo Drift" can most accurately be described as a visual poem about screeching tires, crunching fiberglass, and sleek female skin, set to a killer soundtrack of Japanese pop and hip-hop. The actors are only needed for tight close-ups of narrowed eyes or sweaty hands tightly gripping gearshifts, though Sung Kang, "Better Luck Tomorrow", stands out as a vaguely philosophical hoodlum with deadpan charisma. The curved bodies of the cars and the luscious flesh of the women are both shot with a fetishistic hunger. The "drift" style of racing--in which the cars are allowed to slide in order to take sharp turns at high speeds--grabs your eyes; there's a strange, spectral beauty to rows of cars sliding sideways down a mountain road at night. Also starring Lucas Black ("Friday Night Lights") as our wheel-happy hero; Bow Wow ("Roll Bounce") as the scam-artist comic relief; and martial arts legend Sonny Chiba ("Kill Bill") as a yakuza big shot. Director Dennis Law (Fatal Contact) assembles an unbeatable cast of genre movie stars, starting with Sammo Hung, Simon Yam, and Wu Jing, reteaming after the wildly popular SPL. Joining them are Danny Lee (The Killer), essaying his familiar role as a policeman, with veteran actress Tien Niu and genre regulars Lam Suet, Maggie Siu, Eddie Cheung, and Pinky Cheung also along for the ride. Fatal Move is a gripping underworld saga rich with themes of brotherhood and betrayal, but director Law makes sure to give the core audience what they're really looking for. Fatal Move delivers visceral, eye-opening action choreographed by Li Chung Chi (Invisible Target), and handily earns its Category III rating due to harrowing, exceptional violence. Those who enjoy their gangster sagas with a generous helping of blood should be quite happy with what Law has cooked up here.

Big Brother Lung (Sammo Hung) is the head of a strong, multi-level triad organization involved in multiple illicit activities. The anti-triad cops, led by Inspector Liu (Danny Lee) are watching their every move, but business has never been better, as Lung's brothers, including trusted lieutenant Tung (Simon Yam) and deadly enforcer Tin Hung (Wu Jing), are there to back Lung whenever necessary. Summary: Having seen the movie multiple times, I was very disappointed with the production of this DVD. Scenes have been cut, for example, a mesmerizing nunchaku demonstration from the killer, and some bizarre editing happened: Tom Berenger is beat up by cops in the movie, and that was edited in the dvd, a stripper's dog howls when killed by the psychopath, and that also doesn't appear in the DVD. I am going to sell this ASAP, and buy the much better produced UK edition, which, strangely enough, features all the missing scenes.

Any man unable to wend his way through this three-tree jungle would have to have some kind of problem--as, indeed, one of them does. Despite the jerky direction and leaky script, this on-the-cheap film noir has enough twists and turns to make for a good tale. Lawrence Tierney is even more watchable than usual in his multi-dimensional role as a hard-drinking police sergeant, and John Carradine imparts familiar mystery to his offbeat portrayal of a gossip columnist. Aficianados of fifties crime flicks, in particular, should be well satisfied.

Summary: Those looking for the next great Zombie film look no further!! This is one of the best movies I've seen in a looooooooong time!! "Fido" kinda takes the idea at from the end of "Shaun Of The Dead"(another Zombie great, and for those of you who haven't seen it.. SHAME ON YOU) about domesticating Zombies. All the remaining Zombies after an outbreak are fitted with collars created by "Zomcon" that prevents their hunger for human flesh & are then sold & kept as house pets & laborers. Sometimes though the collars malfunction & carnage ensues. "Fido" has a great wit & sense of humor, I laughed almost the whole way through. It's really more of a satirical comedy than a horror film. I love what the movie says about "the elderly". There are scenes from the movie that feel like they've been ripped straight from "Lassie". A young boy running through an open field followed by his staggering pet Zombie, classic stuff. Billy Connely perfectly plays his undead character, I couldn't believe it was actually him under the make-up. Carrie Anne Moss also does a great job playing a typical 1950's era house wife in a not so typical world. As not to spoil anything plot wise, I've really already described all that you'll need to know going in. Why didn't this get a wide release theatrically, I'll never know. This is definately one you'll wanna own, pre-orderer it, or race to your local DVD store on release date. This'll definately go down in Zombie history as one of the greats!!!

Summary: Stephen Chow stars as a police officer who goes undercover at the Edinburg College to recover the Chief Inspector's gun. While the story may not seem like the greatest, Chow's brilliant comedy is on full dispay and the movie is very well directed by Gordan Chan. After seeing this, I can't think of a better story than Stephen Chow being in school acting as an 18 year old. It works better than you could ever imagine, mainly because this isn't you typical Wong Jing type of movie, though he did help to write the script and also produced the movie. The great acting and directing combined with the comedy is what makes this so great. Not just for fans of Hong Kong Cinema, it's for anyone who likes to laugh. I fell out of my chair a few times. Chow is never really looking for the gun so the plot kind of drags, but it's still a lot of fun, and the story comes together by the end.



I could have used more action. and that is the only thing I was disappointed in. The fights come in spurts about 30 seconds long and are fast and furious, just not long enough.



Fight Back to School part 2 is an even better movie, but part 1 is a classic as well.

Summary: I watched this film a couple of days ago and found it one of the most compelling dramas I've seen in a long time. The strength of the film lies in both the crafting and portrayals of its two leading characters, an older gay man suffering from depression whose budding boxing career had been shattered by homophobia, and a struggling young boxer who just needed the right mentorship to unlock his extraordinary potential. The film is an affirmation of humanity and the positive contributions that people undervalued by society can make in synergy, given the right circumstances.

Both Eddie Jones and J.P. Davis give outstanding performances that cause me to wonder why I haven't seen more of them. Their characters are complex, flawed, but enormously sympathetic; their relationship is both fraught with tension and taboo yet highly successful, for the boxer at least. One strongly identifies and empathizes with both of them.

I am an anti-bullying educator, and am amazed at the insightfulness of the film's message about the power of positive motivation and affirmation to heal the scars inflicted by mistreatment in early life, unleashing unseen human potential that collectively can transform society. I was particularly amazed when I learned that the strapping young actor who plays the boxer, J.P.Davis, wrote the script. I can't imagine him ever having experienced bullying, yet he grasps the dynamics with remarkable perceptiveness. Mr. Davis' mix of strength, tenderness, and vision, in his writing, acting, and example, is a combination hard to fathom, but just goes to show, as the movie teaches, that appearances aren't everything. I was also inspired to read of his struggle to get the film produced, insisting that he play the title character against advice from industry insiders. No doubt they thought, like the otherwise positive reviewer from the New York Times, that Mr. Davis was "too handsome" to come across as one so desperate and gritty. They were wrong. Clearly Mr. Davis knew what he was doing, and the result is moving.

I recommend this film highly, but have one reservation. While the film's hero is the older gay man, he doesn't come to realize his own worth indpendently of his relationship with Tommy Reilly. That's tragic, but instructive at the same time, perhaps opening the eyes of others to their value. This is a film with the ability to change hearts and minds.

As usual, Fonda is good, and Keitel gives an interesting portrayal of a soft-spoken southern mama's boy gone to seed. In the film's centerpiece performance, Keitel dons full Vegas-era Elvis regalia and belts out a rousing version of "Suspicious Minds." Unfortunately, Schaech turns in a rather wooden performance in the lead role. Priscilla Presley gets an executive producer credit, making for authentic shots in and around Graceland. Summary: I have seen many Kung-Fu movies in my time and Fire Dragon ranks #2 on my list of the best fighting kung-fu movie of all time. Woo-ping throws everyhting but the kitchen sink at you in this one.

Brigitte Lin stars as Fire Dragon an unstoppable assassin who uses her hands as flame-throwers and can ignite her sword while weilding it. Her job is to eliminate a master swordsman (Max Mok) who has evidence that will bring down a powerful Fire-master, Prince-Six. This movie strikes a perfect balance between being serious and funny much like Wing Chun. Just when things get too serious, the comic relief is a welcome change, then when the movie starts to drag a bit it gets serious again.

Although the story is good, what seperates this movie from the rest is the superb acting and fighting. Brigitte lin's acting as well as her fighting in this movie is just as convincing as her role in swordsman 2 as invincible asia. Max Mok does a convincing job as a hero and Kwan Ng almost steals the show with her comedic performance.

But what makes this movie shine are the fight scenes. The fighting in this movie has to be seen to be believed. From all the martial-arts movies I have seen, and I have seen many, only one movie has better fight scenes than this. What else would you expect from Woo-ping the great. For example, there is a ferocious fight scene in the forest between Fire Dragon and her best friend Snow, an equally deadly assassin who uses bow and arrows and a grappling chain no less, that features all kinds of destruction including fire-balls, exploding nets and the leveling of trees- great stuff. But the final fight scene, unlike most movies which is a let-down, is absolutely spectacular and the best in the movie. The skill of Prince-Six is frightful as he more than holds his ground against a master swordsman, a baton-wielding, dynamite throwing kung-fu master and Fire Dragon herself-WOW. If I have to rank my top 5 fighting Kung-fu movies of all time, it would be (5)Tai-Chi Master (4)Iron Monkey (3) Swordsman II (2)Fire Dragon (1)Blade of Fury.

In closing, Fire Dragon is a very stylish, hyper-kinetic kung-fu movie, with a good story, great acting and memorable, creative fight scenes that no self-respecting kung-fu fan should be without. Highly recommended.

These two Westerns offer the stars in their relaxed end-of-career mode, with Stewart in the hero roles and Fonda as either villain or burr-under-the-saddle sidekick.
"Firecreek" is a grim 1968 Western that carries a strong residual aroma of "High Noon". Stewart plays a farmer who happens to be the nominal (but rarely needed) sheriff of Firecreek, which means he must go into service when Fonda and his scurvy bunch of desperados (among them Gary Lockwood and Jack Elam) come to town looking for trouble. This slow, stripped-down picture has a philosophical undertone, with Fonda's weary, wounded outlaw trading bitter wisdom with local girl Inger Stevens. It goes on too long and Stewart is in the phase of coasting on his familiar persona, but overall it's a decent little Western fable.
"The Cheyenne Social Club", from 1970, gets off to a marvelous start, with a sequence of saddle tramps Stewart and Fonda riding across half the West as Fonda maintains a fractured monologue throughout. Screenwriter James Lee Barrett was a veteran who worked frequently with Stewart ("Shenandoah") and John Wayne, and some of the Western flavor is fine, but... things turn crass as soon as the pals realize Stewart has inherited a bordello in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Everybody except Fonda overacts mercilessly, and director Gene Kelly--yes, that Gene Kelly--indulges a leering style that undercuts some of the authentic laughs. Shirley Jones is around to provide comfort at the club; some predictable gunplay is mixed in with the jokes. However middling these two films might be in the filmographies of their formidable stars, it must be said that the widescreen transfer of both films to DVD is very good. "--Robert Horton"

Summary:
Adolescence is an emotionally stormy time for kids, but it's especially so for Shane (Josh Hutcherson), a teenager being raised by single firefighter father Connor (Bruce Greenwood). Add the recent death of Shane's fire-captain uncle (Connor's brother) in the line of duty and the pending closure of their neighborhood "Dogpatch" fire station, and both Shane's propensity for skipping school and brooding in his room and his father's obsession with work seem easily explainable. When a mutt called Dewey, really a very spoiled superstar dog named Rexxx who's been presumed dead after a parachuting stunt gone wrong, turns up in a burning building and is rescued by the Dogpatch crew, Connor puts Shane in charge of caring for the dog and finding its owner. Shane and Dewey clash immediately and Shane is extremely resentful toward both the dog and his father. However, Dewey's special talents (like skateboarding and trampoline jumping), combined with his good fire-fighting instincts, soon win the admiration and affection of Shane and the entire Dogpatch crew. A series of mysterious fires causes Shane and Connor to begin to really communicate and reconnect, but those fires also threaten their very lives. At the same time, Dewey's former owner discovers Dewey's true identity and demands the return of his superstar companion. An engaging dog story that explores the difficulties of growing up and dealing with personal tragedy, "Firehouse Dog" is a fun family film that's rated PG due to some mildly crude humor (think potty jokes), language, and action peril. --"Tami Horiuchi"

Summary: A superstar and cultural icon in his native Japan, Takeshi "Beat" Kitano has conquered more than one medium, but he is best known in the West for his remarkable films. Kitano plays a cop named Nishi, a determinedly impassive man whose face occasionally ripples with an involuntary tic, hinting at the explosive but contained forces within. While on a stakeout, Nishi takes a break to check in on her, and while he's gone his partner is crippled and another officer is killed. With death hovering at home and a score to settle outside, Kitano's hero sets off on an isolated course to seek justice.
Few filmmakers have understood as well as Kitano has here the irresistible draw of a thriller told with a moody calmness, with an eye toward graceful construction and rigorous composition. The careful, unhurried dispensing of story information also helps keep the focus on Nishi's warrior soul, on his mysterious capacity for the extremes of gentleness and brutality.
